Ah well - worth a thought... Hopefully someone comes along to help you out - mine is simply used as a headless server so haven't tried outputting sound from it

If you have the NVIDIA drivers correctly installed and sound configured, then the reason is simple - the display EDID information says to the graphics card, that it has no sound output capability.

    ?

My PS3 doesn't have a problem sending sound so I do not think the display is at fault.

Not surprised they're swamped! I found them to be very helpful too - glad you're sorted :thumb:

That is all nice and fine, but it depends what can the graphics card read from the display. For example my LG display works without an issue with an Apple TV 2G, but i have to use custom EDID through a monitor driver INF file or Linux Xorg configuration file with NVIDIA cards; and it is not detected at all with ATI/AMD or Intel GPU.

    Hi guys!

Very excited. Just picked up one of these for £213 from Amazon (£113) after cashback. I'm using it as an upgrade for my 2 Bay Synology DS211j which is quickly filling up.

    Now, couple of questions:

Does anyone have a recommendation for

    1. A PCIe lane powered single slot GPU capable of accelerating 1080p content playback
    2. A cheap and cheerful PCIe sound card

I've owned one for ages now and didn't even realise there were two expansion slots!

For the soundcard I'd go for this (Xonar DGX)

As the for the GPU, I'll have a think - you do have to be careful of the size of the heatsink if it's passively cooled...

Edit: Can't find out if that sound card has a low profile bracket...

Hmmm it might - I have the DX, I'll check if that came with one tonight. Otherwise, good call.

And yep, it has 1x PCIe x16 lane and 1x PCIe x1 lane

Power limitation is the PCIe lane limit which is ~25w I believe.

No i meant they listed cards on that wiki page with higher than 25W power consumption, so i don't know how well they work in the microserver.

Oh I see! Think I'm going to get a 5570 - says it needs a 400W PSU but max TDP on the site is 44W under load - only time I can see you needing a 400W PSU is if you had this in an OC'd SR2.

Others have reported it working, so I'll give it a shot.

So I’m getting a N40L for xmas from the rents (I think they feel guilty because last year they bought me concrete Gargoyles).

Hardware wise I’m planning on having:
    2x 2TB
    1x 1.5TB
    1x 1TB
1x 250GB drive for OS (going in the optical drive bay)

With a Radeon 5450 on GPU duties (HDMI w/audio)

For the OS I’m going to be using a spare copy of Windows8 I have lying about.

Now, I’d like to put the 2x2TB drives in RAID 1, but I’ve never actually set up RAID before, and have some questions.

    1. Can I have the 2x2TB in RAID 1 and the other drives un-raided
    2. Do I need a RAID Card? Or will the N40L be able to do this for me?
    3. How do I set up RAID1 in the first place?
    4. I’d really prefer to use Windows8 for ease of compatibility – unless someone can convince me otherwise?

If Windows 8 is anything similar to WHS2011 (which is just a stripped back Windows 7) then:

    1. Yes
    2. No - I use Windows' software RAID
    3. I went through Disk Management - if you've got a machine running windows 7 then just type that into the Start menu's search bar. I think it's 'Create New Mirrored Volume' or something like that.
    4. What else were you considering? I'm very pro WHS 2011 for its simplicity - also it's cheap! (Not free though)

In terms of Raid, there is a built in RAID in the BIOS you can use

Something like FreeNAS from a Pen drive. But I'd still rather use windows as its so familiar, and I can use it as an HTPC with the 5450.

And also, do I have to insert the RAID drives first or anything like that?

Is it better to use Hardware RAID (from the BIOS) than Software (from Windows).

it has remote web access that is quite fun and is better suited to filesharing etc. I always find I get better performance accessing media on my network when my server is running whs11 and not windows 7. (for some reason I seem to swap between these two fairly often - I got backups of both so I just restore backups to change between them reletively quickly). I find it also manages user credentials and shares easier.
