I want to upgrade my E6700 for something beefier, what Processor would you suggest with what motherboard and ram? Ideally under £400 with a dece bump in performance?. Edit would be a XF board and how much would a new cpu cooler be?

Under £400 is easy - a 2500K with P67 board shouldn't cost much more than £250 and will be a really nice upgrade for you. Add 8GB of memory for £30 and you can then decide what CPU cooler you want, from entry level (£15) to enthusiast air cooling (£55+) or hybrid (£80+).

I'm no expert but that's the jump i just made. Had an E7400 and went to a i5 2500K (don't forget the K bit) with a P67 Motherboard, 8Gb RAM. I've stuck with the stock cooler for now whilst i get things settled but i did add an SSD which makes a huge difference to boot times and program responce. Very happy with the current setup.

    Hi Thanks for the replies.

What kind of headroom would the P67 chipset give me overclocking the 2500k

I intend to Water Cool the 2500k as I already have radiators and the rest from my existing computer. Will an LGA775 waterblock fit the LGA1155 holes? Also is it worth watercooling the North Bridge (actually just looked at a picture of a P67 Board and I can't see what I'm used to a North Bridge and a South Bridge)?

P67 Supports Dual Channel DDR3 Ram only right?

Gee I need to get back on the hardware horse!

You could potentially get it to 5ghz.

You will need a new block will need a new Block i'm afraid.

All the north bridge stuff is now in the actual cpu chip so you wont need to cool anything else other than the cpu.

And yes the the ram question :)

Sweet, I guess that's why it's called Sandy 'Bridge'.

Just to check what is the best chipset for Sandy Bridge for overclocking?

    Many Thanks in Advance.

    Never thought about that :p

Generally the p67 chipset is the best.

Thanks Very Much for all the help. Greatly Appreciated! Ordering the parts tomorrow! Toying with replacing my existing water pump as it's 5 years old, Just not sure how long they go for?!

EDIT: actually the pump i have currently says 50,000 hours. And I reckon my computer is on for 6 Hours a day on average and it's 5.25 years old! So guess it should be okay for a bit yet

Depending on your water block you may be able to get 1155 mounts for it :)
