neato! and you can probably get diamond powder for even cheaper than that guy did:

i'm just thinking, though- why use the smallest diamond particles? wouldn't you want particles of varying sizes, the largest being nearly the same thickness as the layer of paste you're putting on? that way, the heat could be transmitted directly via a single big particle, and only have to jump from particle to particle in the spaces between the big ones.

Sounds interesting. Who wants to do it first?

I think the reasoning in using the smallest particle size is so that larger particles don't create gaps between the cpu and heatsink. You want the thermal paste to be as thin as possible and the smallest particles allow the layer to thin out more than bigger bits would.

i can understand that thinking, but look at the sizes available- 1/2 micron? i have no doubt the layer i'm going to scrape on is going to be thicker than that...

personally, i'm wondering how well the 0-4 micron batch will do.

We discussed this a while back - here
but no one really reported if they did it or not. I, for one did not because I couldn't find a good source for the paste. And no, you DO NOT want varying sized of particles because it's kinda like putting sand between the heatsink and CPU, you will have gaps. Even if the gaps are filled with the paste, the paste is not NEAR as conductive as the diamond, and you will not get the performance as you would with finely ground dust.

You see, what you are actually doing with thermal paste is filling in the microscopic cracks on the surfaces to get as close of a bond between the 2 metals (cpu and heatsink), which is why people polish the CPU and heatsink. We don't want to make the material between the two larger, you actually want to get as much metal from the heatsink as you can to touch as much of the surface of the CPU as you can. Filling in those cracks with fine diamond paste is what you are wanting to accomplish. I'm sorry if I didn't word it quite well but I hope that helps explain.

yeah, those temps are about what a good polishing job and some of the newer compounds can do.

Diamonds can explode under extreme heat and pressure. *

?? What comic books have you been reading? Diamond paste is used for polishing all the time; heated due to friction, and under an applied pressure between polishing pad and the part.

Then again, there are few things that won't "explode" under extreme heat and pressure.

I think I'll stick to my AS5 for now; it's quick, easy, and simply effective.

I should have made the baloney warning bigger. I was joking.
I would try it, but i have no old computer to test it on, and my new computer uses thermal pads with great results.

I know what you are trying to say, but that would probably end up slower than a decent C2Q :D

Makes you wonder what other kinds of crap you can do. Im thinking of doing sand, ground up motherboard, and other assorted items. Ill just grab some crap heap of a computer to use.

That only has 10% diamond particles in it. The home made one has 20%. Makes you wonder
