My R5 3600 and RX590 are struggling and showing their age. Even with settings cranked down on Helldivers 2 for example I'm getting between 30-60 FPS, IF I'M LUCKY, on 1080p 144hz monitor.

I found a ridiculous deal for a 5800x that'll drop into my mobo (B450) with only a BIOS update so that is on the way but I thought that maybe this is the time for a bit of an upgrade. I want my next jump to be solid 1440p gaming. I'm thinking I might go for a 7800XT and good 1440p monitor. Is there any reason on the horizon that I maybe should wait around? There doesn't seem to be much on the horizon that'll make these choices "bad" but I haven't been following things close enough so asking for any advice..

If I were you, I'd go for it. If you're ready to upgrade, do it now, or you'll always be waiting. There's never not, something better on the horizon...

I would pass on the 5800x. For gaming the x3d chips are so much better. Look into the 5700x3d.

7800XT is a very solid choice.

I got the 5800x for £170. (new) The 5800x3d is just under 100 quid more for roughly 9% difference in performance at 1440p. I couldn't justify the extra spend. I think when the prices are closer then you're right, there's no contest. And there's still a bunch of debate about it but the 5800x is on the way so I'll put me fingers in my ears now.

Honestly I’ve considered “side-grading” or “downgrading” to a 5800X3D from a 5900X. The gaming performance of that CPU is astonishing. Gaming is pretty much the only stress I put on my PC, I don’t do any of the “productivity” type stuff that really benefits from 12-cores/24-threads.

But it probably wouldn’t be a worthwhile investment at this point, I’d probably be better off with a platform upgrade.

Went up today. The conclusion is that if you are gaming then get a 3d chip.

Question I need to answer is whether the performance gains I’d get with a 5800X3D are worth the £80-£100 shortfall between selling my 5900X and buying a 5800X3D :thumb:

The 5700x3d is 5% slower in games yet over 20% cheaper.

I always wondered why out of 3 pcs (12700k and 6800xt LC Strix, 11700k and 6950xt and 3950x and 6900xt toxic LC) the latter (which should be the fastest given the brutal GPU) I was losing over 40 fps in PUBG at 1440p vs the 12700k and 6800xt.

Turns out it was the 3950x. Now? That’s my fastest gaming rig.
