    Hi people,

My friend has managed to get hold of a two-month-old written-off Polo, and he'd like to make a beast of a go-cart/buggy thing. :naughty: However, I'm wondering how complex the engine management electronics would be... can anyone point me to some good car-modding (VW in particular of course) sites? I know "modding" isn't the word car-modders use, what do they actually call it?

    Cheers for any info,

    ch424

Yeah just strip out all the excess like heaters, air conditioning etc. Put a straight through exhaust on it. It most likely has a small engine which doesnt have much potential.

Strip out all the unneeded electrics, windows, carpets, rear seats etc. Depending on what state it's in he can probably sell a fair amount of the interior off to pay for some bits for the engine ;)

No no no, sorry, I didn't explain properly! We're making a new chassis, steering etc. All we want is the engine! I presume we're re-using the gearbox, but as it's front wheel dive, it'll need more than stripping for the engine to go at the back. What I'm looking for is info on VW engine electronics...

    cheers for the suggestions though!

Leave the ecu and wiring intact. Waterproof the connections and ecu as much as you can. The complete front suspension/engine/transaxle/brakes welded to the rear of the new chassis will work fine. Just remove the steering and put adjustable tie rods in its place. You might want to get a VW bug front end.

Hello, kinda coincedence I was searching for info on said wiring loom and google threw up this thread :duh: . Yeah, I've taken out 2.5 of the 4 wiring looms, having taken note of where it all goes. It's all built in subframes - the engine/gearbox/dif/suspension/steering are all one unit bolted to the chassis by 6 large bolts. I'm using as much as I can, and will dump/ebay the rest. It's about 60hp (alex, wocm's is 6.5hp :naughty: ) so has a predicted top speed of about 400mph. most of the wiring is for the ecu, lights, so I can get rid of most of the sensors. There is no power steering/air con, so that simplifies it a lot. I will lock the steering wheels straight, and use that as one combined back axle. most of what i need is there - just need some steam pipe/thick ms, and a MIG welder. School shall provide...
    Have a great new year
