Weelllll... I have to have the red and orange LEDs, because I want the 75-100 area to glow in those colors... three white LEDs to highlight the 0-75 range might sound excessive, but because of the close distance from the back of the gauge to the front, their viewable angle is not very great, so 1 or 2 LEDs alone won't highlight the sweep sufficiently. Then one more red LED needs to be mounted near the plastic cover of the gauge to highlight the transparency with the maltese cross and WCC text. So that's 6 mandatory LEDs, and don't forget many of these are being mounted behind photo paper and a couple transparencies, so the proper brightness is crucial to pull off the right look. And then that just leaves the "LAN activity" and "HDD activity" areas... might be able to pull this off with just one LED, it would just have to be a good wideangle one. So maybe 7 instead of 8... if that's any more reasonable
ok, now I see why you need so many.Where did you get them from? I know this guy on ebay was selling abgs of 100 LEDs for about 20 bucks. I picked up a bag of blue ones and they are very bright
hey dage, very nice work with the plexi cutting, can i ask where u got the 1u psu and the 1u hs from, i am looking to get myself one of them aswell, thanks, keep us posted!
Mostly Jameco or allelectronics, because of the variety of colors required... and sadly some last minute trips to radio shack for some overpriced LEDs. Not sure what I'd do with a hundred though, maybe stuff 50 of them in a single gauge or something Thanks much... The PSU is from rackmountnet.com, but I probably paid a little more for the name brand. The HSF is from frozencpu.com. I think someone mentioned a 1u HSF that can support a 2200+ though, so I would search the modding forum.
Ripped it out of an R/C dump truck. The actuator was used for "dumping" the load. Extra bonus for using this off an R/C truck... I'll be able to control it remotely And in other news, the gauges are now finished Here's the back... So many LEDs, with so many varying power requirements. This was the cleanest I could get it. Added some heatshrink for obvious reasons: bright. And here it is, fully functional. Had to dig up an old hot glue gun to mount some of the bits. Never thought I'd need to use that again, but it did come in extremely handy. And of course I wouldn't leave you all without a crappy digicam video of it all working (1mb, divx). Not too bright at all
Very very nice!!! After all the plexi cutting at the beginning of the worklog, I'm really looking forward to seeing how it's going to come together. The gauges were also are really good idea.
Dude, this work is impeccable! A lot of these mods would make for an amazing car computer system. So many people put computers in their cars, and a lot of them look horrible. Doing work like this in a car for computer and stereo purposes would make for a really impressive setup. You'll have to show this to the folks at WCC when you're done. Who knows, they may want to expand into the modding world after seeing this.
WOW.... I wish I had seen this before building the meter on my LAN PC.... You got this mastered.... VERY nice....
Dang man, if you send jesse pix of this case he might very well want to buy it from you... that's awesome work!
actually in all seriousness if you send a video and the pictures to monster garage it could very well get Weld of the Week, the last one I saw was some dude who screwed a metal cover to the side of his lawnmower, this has much more work and creativity to it, and it's WCC themed.
But what if there is a trademark problem? I hope that Jessie would be cool with this, but you never know.....
All else fails, he can just remove the West Coast Choppers words from the Maltese (sp?) cross. I don't think they can trademark that as it's been around since the middle ages in various forms.
