OK, come to a stage where I have quite a bit of money, but whenever I look to spend it seems as if I don’t quite have enough. At the moment my specs are: E8500 P5Q-5 4 gigs normal corsair 800mhz ram palit HD 4850 sonic 400gig WD HDD 850w silverstone strider PSU NO CASE, I’m literally running my pc out of a box. and no water cooling. So basically, what do people reckon I should do with the money. I know if I sold my current kit I would have enough but i7, which is desirable, but on the other hand I would either have no case or a really cheap one. On the other hand If I purchased water cooling and a case I would be left with outdated hardware. What do I do? Computer will be used for gaming (Not all the time on ultra high settings kind of thing, just normal gaming) Overclocking, folding, and showing off + tinkering with for the fun of it.
Personally I would keep most of the hardware unless you really want to upgrade, gaming performance should be fine - perhaps upgrade the graphics card to a Nvidia card to improve folding performance and possibly get faster memory for overclocking. Other than that I'd say get a nice case and save the money for a rainy day!
i wouldnt call your current setup dated. but still... its a dilema of will you keep the 775 platform or move on to i7 / AM3. but, since you said its for gaming / overclocking / showing off / having fun... if i was you, i would buy a nice simple watercooling loop, nice CPU block / 240mm rad, quality pump, overclock the crap out of that dual core, possibly buy another 4gb of ram and a HDD if you need the space, then grab a nice looking case and have fun modding to any degree you want, full blown custom case or a simple, class looking watercooling loop mounted nicely. orrr buy a sweet graphics card and a case.
i'd buy a nice wc setup, maybe another 4850 for xfire if your board supports it. then you can oc your cpu and gfx card(s). i'm currently looking at a wc setup for my pc with aquacomputer for just over £300, its expensive but man they make some sweet gear..i'd spend more if i could afford to! peace fatman
Buy a case? Save the rest of the money untill the DX11 cards are out, I don't see much point in upgrading from a 4850 at the moment.
I would buy faster ram and a nice cooler for the cpu and clock the hell out of it. Your board should at least be able to do 450Mhz fsb, and i'm sure the chip can handle it as well. EDIT: OH, and a nice case!
upgrade to i7, you'll have 400 + 100 (selling your mobo/ram/cpu) enough to buy a good i7 setup. i so want an i7........ but only have 100 or so, so selling my current kit still isn't enough
no point getting i7 won't benifit you one bit if i was you i would buy a case get a cooler master dominator v2 Swiftech H2O-220 275gtx
Case! CPU cooler for big oc? Eg TRUE. New HDD drive? Maybe a big boy like a Samsung F1 1TB? Or perhaps raided 500GB F1s.
I'd buy a nice case and a good Watercooling setup. £400 is a pair of water loops and a nice full aluminium case.
No point in buying i7 unless you have loads of money to spend. By the time they will become much use the price will have come down dramitcally.
dont listen to any of these guys, they are giving you horrible advice. no no, do something truly amazing with that money. donate it to the make a wish foundation/trig's new gpu, mobo, and ram fund. your donation will go to a trig in need. i promise. and for your generosity, we will send you a small thank you note and a picture of your trig with his new upgrades installed into his rig. don't let his dream die, give today, god wants you to.
