I've been thinking about this. What do people do when they upgrade to newer components or buy a new computer?

Do people sell their old hardware? Or do they use the old computer as a secondary one? Do they put the old CPU / Graphics card somewhere and use it in their new HTPC build next month? Or do they simply give them away or thrash them?

Please release my pain by telling me the thruth.

I've just built & rebuilt (& upgraded) many systems. You can only have so many "secondary" computers then you have to start selling / trading parts or giving them to family or ...

I store it in a cupboard in my Dads room where he keeps all his old hardware aswell, its a mess but some of it comes in handy from time to time.

Spares, resell if it's worth the trouble, repurpose as a slave... whatever's needed really.

Don't forget the Donations thread in the Bit-Tech forums. One man's trash is another man's treasure.

I make spare PC's out of the parts, when I upgrade friend's PC's they normally let me have the old parts as payment which is cool. I've got a PC set up in my Uni house that I remote into over the holidays so I utilise that bandwidth whilst no1 is there. I never really put them in cases tho, they tend to just sit in cardboard boxes.... really need to get the modding on:dremel:

I usually take my old parts and put them in my parents computer, helps my sibling keep her Sims 2 running smoothly. The ol' Ti4200 wasn't quite cutting it. Or if I completely upgrade, they get the computer.

Hmm, I haven't seen that thread yet - though I suspect distance would make that an untenable proposition anyway (at least for shipping smaller parts). Some time in the new year myself and a few friends plan to pool our junk resources and make a few computers to give away - I'm sure I have enough for close to three complete systems - though mostly in the 1.5-2.5GHz range (still good enough for e-mail, internet browsing, homework, etc.).

usually upgrade my servers, they're always in need of some love and attention... but yes, there comes a point when you cant harbour much more junk and old parts, so its off to ebay with it all
