COD 4 uses an upgraded version of the Quake 3 engine, so it should run reasonably well.

According to videocardbenchmark.net (awesome tool for comparing video cards across different generations, BTW)

Geforce 9400 GT ranks #274 with a score of 276.
    Radeon X850XT ranks #115 with a score of 641.
Geforce 9600 GT ranks #56 with a score of 927.

So, yeah, TheBlackSwordsMan is completely correct.

GTA4 will not run in a way that you will actually want to play it, either upgrade your graphics card or save yourself some money and don't buy the game.

Red Faction Guerilla and Burnout Paradise will hardly run either.

    RFG recommended specs:
CPU: 3.2 GHz Dual-Core Processor (Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Athlon X2)
Memory: 2GB RAM / 15GB of Hard Drive space
Video Card: 256MB 3D Video Card with Shader Model 3.0 Support (Nvidia GeForce 8800/ATI Radeon HD3850

    B.P recommended specs:
    Processor: Intel Core 2 DUO @ 2.5 GHz / AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+
    Memory: 2 Gb
    Hard Drive: 4 Gb free
    Video Memory: 512 Mb
Video Card: nVidia GeForce 8800 / ATI Radeon HD 2400

Realistically, if you want to play those types of games, you're going to have to upgrade your GPU.

You will have to spend around £120 on a videocard that will make it look as good/better than the 360 version. With your current card, it will look terrible

You could try this one http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/512MB-Asus-HD-5770-PCI-E-21-(x16)-4800MHz-GDDR5-GPU-850MHz-800-Cores-DL-DVI-I-HDMI-D-Sub

Did you think of putting in a different graphics card.
I bought a 4830 here for my little brother for only 40 pounds inc shipping

Videocardbenchmark.net is indeed a great tool, but be wary of using it as a final say.

In this case it's probably just fine, the 9400 GT is so far behind that no margin of error is saving it, but if you check the site you'll see errors such as the GTX470 above a 5870, A 5870 over a 5970 (probably a CF driver/profile issue artificially making the card look bad) or a GTX465 being better than a GTX460 (which it shouldn't be) since it's based off of synthetic tests which do not always follow real world performance.

When making an actual comparison to determine a card to buy, for example, be sure that you read real reviews with in game benchmarks.

I find it useful to compare cards of different generations.

For instance, Bit-Tech has a whole bunch of good reviews comparing all of the HD 5xxx and GTx 4xx cards to all of the HD 4xxx and GTx 2xx cards. They can all be tested on the same hardware, and get some very accurate results, across benchmarks as well as 'real world' performance.

But, for something like comparing a 9400GT to a Radeon X850XT, cards that are several generations apart (AFAIK the X850XT was around the same time as the Geforce 6000 series, so a solid 3 generations back from the Geforce 9000 series) and have never been directly benchmarked against each other due to an age gap and significantly different CPU/MB/RAM setups, that's where the big list can be useful.

They are indeed. But if the OP can give us some more detailed info about his rig, we can see what will run.

The difference between an E5500 and an E7400 could be a fair bit.

they supressed the "Core-Duo'' term in 2009 to reintroducing 'Pentium' for the E2xxx E5xxx E6xxx and the G6950

Oh, certainly! I recently used it to show my friend how using my old 8800 GT would probably (key word, probably!) be better than his 9500 GT which had just died. Another good use is finding what cards are in your price range. See a 5850 online for a price you like? Just head to that site and see what cards are near it on performance and check their prices. It's an incredibly useful tool when used properly. Just giving a little warning to anyone using that site expecting accurate and in depth measurements of each card's performance :)

He did give the clock speed, a person can figure it out from there. If he's got a Pentium and a 9400 GT then he's probably new to PC building and PC gaming, we've all been there before and I'm sure we've all appreciated any help we were given despite our noobishness.

You have to be looking to be proved wrong there man.

Even at stupidly low resolutions a rig like that will struggle to run Crysis... When I had my PC running, C2Q @3.6, 4Gb RAM, GTX260, I was playing it on medium settings just to get playable frame rates.
