    There's a resistor, capacitor, inductor, and what-the?

rectangle with a line through is typically a fuse... maybe this is a resettable fuse?

Looks like a Metal Oxide Varistor to me.

:hehe: Across a signal to ground!?

    Maybe it's a WMD™ circuit. :worried:

The curvy line thing at the top is an inductor. An inductor and a capacitor with one grounded end is a common circut in RF gear.

 It's a common circuit in just about any gear! And he already knew what the inductor was

the element in question is probably a varistor, one of higher voltage rating than the power supply is rated at.

why is the output labeled "bus"???

wana give us the rest of the circuit?

what i believe is that it is a adjustable filter all-together with the other components, which you can adjust so the circuit behind it runs on the same frequency as the dynamo or alternator in your car, as probably the information signal is being superponerd on to the dc of your car, and therfor you'll need the cicuit to sepperate the information from your dc-signal.

But that's what i think, it maybe wrong.
