It's bonus time for me next month so thinking about the upgrade again I'm just wondering what AMD have got in store for us over the next few months to a year. 1. Are they changing socket type again? 2. Will there be a chip that can keep up with the latest and greatest graphics 3. When will (if any) these new chips be released. I'm not a fanboy, but in the PC's I've built I've never used an Intel set up, i'm just more comfortable with AMD I guess. I'm also thinkg about water cooling although I guess this can be purchased at a later stage but how does in take WC Manufactures to release new blocks for new chips etc etc, I'm guessing not long but thought I'd check. I'd rather facts than rumour Cheers Paul (buzz)
Socket M2 is the best thing for AMD, which will bring DDR2 to the A64 platform, but that's not for months yet I would think. Best nit to wait for "what's around the corner".. just buy the best you can now, as there's always something coming out soon. Danger Den had the NV78 block out pretty quick, and then the SLI version, so DD at least are pretty quick. I'd recommend water.. just built my first water cooled rig, and apart from a few lessons I had to learn along the way, it wasn't too bad.
@pookeyhead : ur slightly wrong there matey...AMd are completly missing out on DDR2 as its pure pants...just look at how intel were pimping it and they were well confident that they would outperform AMD but alas....high speeds at crap latancies with super long pipeline archetecture for the P4's could not beat AMD...thats is why AMD are going for the M2 with DDR3!!!
Really? That's news to me. I hear that they're also integrating the PCI-Express controller into the processor as well, but as far as I know, that's just conjecture.
its still quite awhile away.....if u can stick it out i would...if not then get a 939 PCI-E system....either way 939 will still be around!...but i gonna stick to me SktA system for now
Erm no he's right. M2 is going to be DDR2 based not DDR3 DDR2 is starting to mature a little, its the ideal time for AMD to make the jump.... The reason they're not out performing AMD is simply down to the worse arcitecture of the chips, not 'cos of the memory. The AMD's tend to like the lower latencies more than Intel, and with reasonable latencies available at 667 on DDR2 now (which iirc is M2's stock) it kinda makes sense. Especially since DDR3 wont be ready by Q1/2 2006 and DDR1 is being slowly phased out
there was a news article on this site somwhere where it stated AMD were gonna pass over DDR2 and go straight to DDR3?? maybe have compatibality for both....but it did deffo say that M2 will have DDR3 sometime.
There were roumers that they would, but it seems that now they won't. Not sure if M2 will support DDR3, if the pin count is the same (doubt it tbh) then it may do...
