Its aimed at kids and parents who want to relive their youth isn't it?

I have enjoyed quite a lot of the Matt Smith episodes, however the last one just seemed a bit CGI-eye-candy-'cos-Clara's-just-been-introduced-and-we-need-some-spectacle-to-show-her-"space and time"-is-really-wow-but-we-can't-be-bothered-to-come-up-with-an-interesting-story fluff.

    Richard E. Grant.

Then again he already played a baddy recently, so that would get confusing. OK, how about Steven Mangan (he was miscast as Dirk Gently; that should have been Timothy Spall).

I actually thought Mangan was really good casting for Dirk. Timothy Spall is too old and has too much of an air of being "down to earth" about him :)

You have to see Timothy Spall in Poliakoff's Shooting the Past in all his eccentric glory to really appreciate him as an actor.

Seriously, watch the series. It is the only decent thing Poliakoff has ever produced.

I haven't. I'm somewhat averse to Poliakoff so wouldn't normally concider it, but I'll have to check it out.
For the record, I really love Timothy Spall, he's just not Dirk to me.

Shooting the Past is excellent, definite recommendation for Timothy Spall alone.

He's a pretty close fit to the character in the books. And when you see him in his slightly manic eccentricity in Shooting the Past, it suddenly makes sense.
