Just wondered if anyone is still licensing the format? Is it possible that it might be resurrected one day (in India or China maybe) under a different name? Or given away as open source so anyone can make players?

Seems a shame to waste all that R&D and IP...

As far as I'm aware, the HD DVD standard is "owned" by the DVD Forum, the same group that manages the format standard for DVDs - however, their website section on HD DVD doesn't look as though it's been updated for a while.

I believe China already have their own next gen format (its name escapes me at the moment, though), and BluRay will be fairly ubiquitous in the next five years anyway, so I can't see the HD DVD format being resurrected any time soon.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought HD-DVD was *officially* long dead ..
Didn't it make way to Blu-ray and wasn't it from the Microsoft camp?

EDIT: And sadly, things that become outdated in the US, land up in large quantities in India's as well as China's shores. Sad, but true.
