Clearly something to do with the space race, was it an astronaut? After much searching I still don't know who the original quoter is. Anybody any idea?

Indeed it is. Apollo 8 was the first mission to go around the moon and be totally blocked from the light of the Sun. He was musing about what they might see on the dark side.
