windows 10 free upgrade

Just a quick one.

Been asked regarding upgarding 10 computers to W10. All are on genuine W7.

Can you still do the free upgrade using the W7 key?

 

Last I heard... yes, 10 still activates with 7 and 8.x keys.

 

Only on retail keys though, not OEM unless I'm mistaken.

 

Whilst it may work, you would not be licensed & if audited you would be non-compliant

AFAIK its all retail keys so should be straight forward.

How would it not be licensed if you upgraded using genuine keys via microsofts own service?

 

OEM keys still work if you use the media creation tool

 

Due to Microsoft's wonderfully complicated licensing system.
Whilst it does work, it wasn't done during the correct window so technically isn't a valid license (even though it's activated & works).
They'll only find it via an audit of the company, M365 upgrades are the only way without purchasing it outrught
