Hey guys Having wasting most my evening peeing around with a new ssd (which works a treat) and windows 7 pro (pain in the ass) i have managed to get there in there end after countless installations. From fresh installs to xp upgrade it finally settled on an upgrade from vista and is now working find however two problems when i did the last upgrade to 7 it asked to do a clean installation which i did but when i now restart i there is two windows 7 for me to just from which is adding 30 secs to a restart can this be removed? Also i seem to have a folder that says old.windows and has 13gig of valuable space am i ok to just do a straight forward delete? please advise ads.
I wouldn't as some files will prob be protected and you will still get the multi boot option. Just do another wipe, format the drive completely deleting all partitions, then re-install window and it should work fine.
I have managed to delete the old.windows folder via disk cleanup, which has freed up valuable space. Problem being it took me like a good 3-4 hours to get it fully functioning after countless restarts, hundreds of updates and driver installation was a complete. can the installation be backup or cloned, re-formatted and then re-install via a backup a possibility and most importanly get rid of the annoying select an OS Option on boot up :/
just been reading on this and found this however this was kinda related to xp but dunno if the same applys to windws 7:- "If it's just an extra boot menu option, fortunately this is easy to fix. Click Start, right click on My Computer, and click Properties. Click the Advanced tab. Under "Startup and Recovery", click Settings. Here, in the "Default operating system" drop down box, you will see two choices. You can manually edit your boot.ini, the file containing the list of operating systems that can be booted, but I would not recommend this unless you're familiar with boot.ini's cryptic format. If you get it wrong, your system isn't going to boot anymore and it can be ugly to get fixed. The easy, trouble-free way to get rid of this menu is to just uncheck the "Time to display list of operating systems" box, and make sure XP Pro is selected in the drop down box. Click OK, and click OK again. Then restart your system, and you'll see the boot menu is gone." seems abit too easy hopefully it will work but not sure if this can be done on 7, its all new to me it would save me alot of hassle.
to get rid of the multiboot, just write msconfig in the start bar search, go to boot tab, and it will let you delete one of the two there. Just make sure you delete the right one!
That was not a scary reply at all lol, but tbh i have only ever clicked the first one (top one) maybe i should click the second one see what happens i guess they both are the same tho. says something like please select boot: Windows 7 Windows 7 Its even more frustrating as ive just bought windows 7 and a new SSD for it so its killing my boot speed so im yet to experience the full wonderness of an SSD
As a rule of thumb when i do stuff like this (which isnt at all risky ) i would delete the bottom one. As in my head, the top one is the one that is booting. delete the bottom one, cross your fingers, and reboot. (i wont take the credit if you brick your windows and have to reinstall ) edit: i think if you chose the bottom one on boot, probably nothing will happen, or it will ask for proper boot media.
I will take your advice on board have a try tonight i will report back afterwards with either a big thank you or some abuse lol
