    Hi everyone,

does anyone know of any nice little programs that can scan running windows services and let the user (e.g. me) know if there are services that are not required, or at least trace them to what actually requires them?

I'm currently having problems with games running slow and sometimes not at all and the games company tells me it's my background services and tasks going on.

The worst example is the game FEAR which won't run at all and VUgames tell me it's a program called 'get right' messing it up. However, i have never installed this but could imagine another program could be doing something similar.

    Please help. :wallbash:

TuneUp Utilities analyzes all kinds of information about your computer, including running processes. The above link will take you to the download page for their fully functional 30-day trial. Should do the trick.

Which is what I would suggest, it basically takes all the utilities in windows and puts it into one interface, has so many options it's a good program albeit cartoony!

Start>Run>Services.msc. You can see all the Windows services, whether they are started, and their dependencies. There's plenty more stuff like this in the Administrative Tools section, but I can't recall whether that's in Home edition or not.

TuneUp Utilities also includes information about the manufacturer of the service, and whether or not the service poses a security threat. It analyzes the registry, cleans stuff from your hard drive Windows misses, etc.

LOL the registry cleaner has found 944 problems/errors.

I'll be a while checking each one now.

Do you get any error messages? What tools did you run with the utility?

OK, here's a complete list of problems which i've put in various threads in different sections (and 1 i haven't mentioned) depending on what I was actually talking about....

    1. When windows loads into desktop i get a message saying my registry has been recovered from a backup (this has been coming up for months now) and i dunno what to do about that.

    2. My copy of FEAR keeps deciding it doesn't want to load. The mouse will show the hour glass loading animation for about 5 seconds and then stops and nothing happens. FEAR is in the running processes but not running apps.

I got it to work somehow, dunno how, the other night but after using all the utilities in the program mentioned above it now no longer works.

    3. All games have mini slow down/rapid freezes for 250ms every 2 seconds.
I've tried 3 different drivers for my 6800gt. It's running at 60 degrees idle.

    There we go. :sigh:

The thing is the PC worked pretty much fine up until about a week ago.

The only thing that would occur ocassionally would be the system auto restarting when about to enter windows. This has not got worse in recent weeks, just happens every time in about 10 restarts.

What did just happen however is the system restarted itself after i closed cubase the music program. hmmmmm.

Do i really need to reformat, there's so much i'd need to backup. :waah:

No, it didn't. When you see the message below, you've got a serious problem.

I think what we would do in your situation is to reformat and install everything from scratch. You obviously don't have to, but it would be the best way to get your computer back to an acceptable state.

    Good luck.

You think hard drives don't ever fail without warning? If data's worth keeping, it's worth always having a backup copy, not just when you need to reformat. :nono:

At a minimum, set up a couple of partitions so you can have the OS on its own... :sigh:

    ok ok ok guys....

I have a C and D drive on the same hard disk, so 2 partitions.

I suppose i'll get busy reinstalling everything, the thing is i've gone and left all my discs for stuff at another address. So i can't do anything until mid jan.

I have a backup of my uni work on my mp3 player
