To mods: The 'other' tag was selected because it's cross platform, a more general PC All tag would be great for this sort of thing

Hi all, check this game out, as it's just released it's first release - available at http://www.xonotic.org/.

Xonotic is a free (GPL), fast-paced first-person shooter that works on Windows, OS X and Linux. The project is geared towards providing addictive arena shooter gameplay which is all spawned and driven by the community itself. Xonotic is a direct successor of the Nexuiz project with years of development between them, and it aims to become the best possible open-source FPS (first-person-shooter) of its kind.

The game is based off the Darkplaces game engine which is originally a quake modification, though it is now far more advanced over the course of many years of development. Because of the features of this engine, Xonotic has incredibly good graphics for an opensource game and is on par with most commercial games from 2006-2007. The gameplay is of course slightly inspired by several other games, but it is essentially a unique mixture of mostly original and different ideas which really makes the game stand out. It could be considered most similar to Unreal Tournament and Quake at its heart, especially regarding teamplay and game mechanics.

Hope to see you about, I'm currently playing on various minsta-CTF servers, having been on Nexminsta from NExuiz for a while.

Any chance of a bit-tech server if enough interest can be gained?

I played Xonotic when it first came out last December for a couple weeks on and off. It's really difficult finding players in the US, but I believe they have a irc channel where you can queue with other players that way you don't have to wait in server all day long.

Regarding the game, it's really really fun. If you like ut 2004 you'll probably like this game. The community is small, but very friendly and nice.

I don't think we need a bit-tech server. Not enough players and not to mention there are so many empty servers pre-existing waiting to be populated first :/

Xonotic is a plain deathmatch game. I got into it when a friend at school (which runs Linux on the PCs) send me Nexuiz so that we could play with a few other people in the IT room. Really fun - but development on Nexuiz has stopped. So I did a bit of research and found Xonotic. I really like the movement (bunny hopping) and have yet to master strafe turns!
