So I got this run down vaio that wasn't needed and now I want to run Ubuntu or Xubuntu on it but im not sure if its compatible and I want to run the dual boot but it should be fine as the official site says. But if anyone knows if it will work on a vaio please let me know.

Dual boot is fairly simple, see post 5.
As far as the laptop goes the best way to find out is to install it, some will have some funky proprietary hard ware which will be unsuported to varing degrees but i don't know about yours inparticular.
Just have a go and report back how you get on.

Sony laptops are notorious for lots of proprietary arsing around.

Feisty has that new hardware profiler now, you can look through and see what's listed.
