Saw that a couple of days back. Hilarious. I really love Jonnyguru for testing PSUs properly, and also testing the crap ones just to show why you should pay the extra to get a proper PSU.
Ive always run "crap" power supplies for 11 years now. Never owned a decent branded one. Pc is mainly used for gaming Have been running a CIT(Color IT) 600w that has run an ATI 4870 and core 2 duo for 3 years. Think it only cost about 18 quid. Currently running an ATI 6950 which seems to be fine Have always found it hard to swallow the cost of £100+ supplies. Maybe I've just been lucky?
You have i've built two computers with cheap PSUs (my first and my bros first). mine gave up after 4 months, and my bros after 6. Since then i've bought OCZ, Corsair and BeQuiet - all are still working perfectly. (although that corsairs getting to be a noisy little bugger - ofc it's the one in the media pc too )
I've delt with cheap PSU's many times, all of them resulted in the machine dying after 6 months or so, sometimes taking a motherbooard, HDD or graphics card with them. Never in my machine though. You may buy a '600W' PSU but it'll only output half of that and not have any overpower protection, so if it blows it will kill your hardware. As you can see I now run a Revolution PSU, regarded as the best there is. The list of features is long, and the peak power is insane (over 1KW for my 850W unit). This PSU will last my till I leave uni, and seeing as I'm in my first year that's a fair distance away. You truly do get what you pay for after all...
