If you are going to be doing it seriously and long term I think litecoin mining is the way to go, the returns on bitcoin mining are pretty small unless you are already sitting on quad crossfire 7970s. I am just doing it to see how much I can make over a couple of months and maybe sell on if the prices sort themselves out!

I started doing it solo using the litecoin qt wallet built in miner. I tried using pool.x-eu but kept having connection issues, seeing as my gpu is doing bitcoins I just gave up after an hour of trying to join a pool, the less pool websites I sign up for the better to be quite honest.

when i tried the built in miner it didnt do anything...

and i read up on that miner and some people said its a waste of time...

and i think solo mining is a waste also...

I have not used bitminter, but if you have option for extra flags click 'v' or if it's a text box put '-v'

+1 on guiminer it is the same and so there is a flag for continuous mining or to allow desktop use. My 7950 at a noise level of clocks I can cope with is 420 mhash/s then when you enable desktop it goes down to just over 300 mhash/s
