It will take about 2 seconds for the CPU to reach dangerous temperatures so you may well have damaged the chip in the past.

This. One of our technicians where I work fried a 775 CPU because he forgot to put the heatsink back on. Took 5 seconds.

Even a pasteless heatsink is risky, but I'd prefer that to a naked chip!

My friend cooked his i5-2500k by doing just that.

The time you save by not applying TIM or not putting on the heatsink just isnt worth the financial cost

It's amazing the difference it can make. If you smash a light bulb and turn it on the filament burns out in about 3 seconds.

Get some rubber fan mounts like these. Although you shouldn't have too much trouble if you're using the right screws:

They should self tap through the holes if you are able to put enough pressure on them. Alternative is old fashioned nuts and bolts for a truly ghetto look :D

I believe that the hole is just incredibly tight, there are reports of it on the overclock3d.net forum.
I suggesst either picking up some WD40 or similar lubricant or using a circular file to widen the holes on the fan.

Alternatively i have some rubber screws I can send you.

Edit; I should also disclose that I gave these fans to maple, I mounted them successfully in my phantom using the screws that came with the case rather than the fans (as the case screws were black)

I'm confused. Why were you trying a Simperon chip? I thought it was a 775 board you have? And yeah, fan screws are fan screws. They're the only screw that looks remotely like that in an entire PC. They should fit every fan under the Sun.

Oh and on the subject of lightbulbs. It makes sense that they burn out if you smash them. They contain inert gases like argon so burn incredibly slowly. Exposed to air, which is far more reactive due to oxygen etc, they'll burn brighter for much shorter periods of time :)

My budget pc is actually turning out to be better than my 'beast pc' with exception of case, power supply and SSD

beast pc costing 4x more aswell

    Read the thread :)

He asked if a chip can run without a cooler, dudes said no, so he said "i've done it before for a few seconds", dudes replied "all it takes is a few seconds to destroy the CPU, your P4 is now probably dead" and he replied "nah it was an old Sempron I tried it on, not the current P4. Moving on.."

    makes sense?

We've read the thread, but due to wording it seemed like he was trying a Simperon in a 775 board, hence the confusion. I (and presumably Shirty) got it after "it was a long time ago" :)

Now about these screws.......assuming they look like the ones in the pic above, they fit. They just need lots of "coercion".
