I'm just a bit confused at the choice of hardware used for the testing. Shouldn't you have gone with an x79 system into order to prevent any possible bandwidth issues when running the cards in SLI at the high resolutions you tested at?

I know the results aren't always going to be swayed that much, but if you're testing the top end cards, you shouldn't introduce an issue like that. Seems odd to wait all this time, only for a review whose numbers are questionable thanks to that reason.

@Maki - it's probably because there's about 0.05% of the PC population using x79 systems, the results in this test are closely aligned to what the other 99.95% are using.

I don't think PCI-E Gen2 was exactly saturated beforehand, the GTX690 ran perfectly well on it, so the test system with PCI-E Gen3 with 3 lanes at x8 should be plenty of bandwidth.

I concede the point you make is valid in an ultimate sense, but in the real world, it's not going to make a noticeable difference (1 or 2 fps max I'd say).

    Just my 2c

Meh, no joy on my Dell 3007 either. Still, I hadn't considered custom resolutions before - could be handy to drop down to 2560x1440 if my GPU starts to struggle in some games in the future.

I thought that if you did that the aspect ratio would be wrong e.g. stretched faces etc.

Don't you have to drop resolution so that it has the same aspect ratio?

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

It all depends on if the monitor as 1:1 pixel mapping I think; mine has but I haven't tried it. If it does you can change the res but not use all of the screen space.

I fail to see how the first point is relevant to this test though? I mean whoever is in the market for more than one Titan is clearly not part of that percentile either, and they are far more likely to have an X79 system than not. In fact, I would argue that if they don't have an X79 system, then they haven't researched their build properly at all and are throwing away performance they payed for. A single Titan is okay on Z77, even a 690 or 7990 is fine too, that's because they're running from one slot on both chipsets so 8x8 anyway. But two separate cards will see a performance increase on X79 thanks to being able to run them at x16 each. It may have been the case that the bandwidth wasn't an issue back when it was first mentioned, but it certainly is now thanks to the more powerful cards and higher resolutions we're playing at.

The GTX Titan is like an STD, whilst you want to boast that you got laid, you don't really want to say you got a good old dose of the clap to go with it.

Its a nice return seeing gfx cards allowing custom resolutions.

Back in the late 80s -90s i used to use an Amiga egs gfx card (£1500), and you were able to compromise frequencies for refresh etc etc, to try squeeze best res you could.

So basically you would enter the spec of the monitor, then you could create the resolution based on this and allowing overclocking.

You knew when you went too far as you lost pic, then could drop back down a bit.

So whilst a very old teqnique, its nice to see it available finally (although 20 years late) on a typical pc.

Pillar box - I'd just end up with black bars top and bottom, with no distortion. It looks ok actually.

No biggie, but I wanted to DL and run the Heaven benchmark to compare my results with 1x 580 in my system against your Titan results. The title for the graph says the res is 2560x1200, but the screenshot and intro to the bench says 1980x1080. I'm fairly sure it is 1980x1080 them, is it? Just clarifying to amke sure I can compare as best I can.

    My bench in Heaven 3.0 just finished and I got 1427 with 1x 580, Win7, 8GB, i5-2500K at 3.3Ghz. Your 680 achieved 1115.

    I've done something wrong ... ? :sigh:

.. Within the driver screen, do you setup for performance or quality?
.. Did you use 3.0 and not the newer Heaven 4.0?
    .. Did you use 2560x1200 or 1920x1080?

I'm assuming the test was done at 2560x1600 and the 1200 was a typo, AND they've just reused the standard blurb from other benchies when they test at 1920x1080.

I say this because a 680 will do 1800-1900 stock at 1080p in Heaven, and a 670 will do 1700-1750.
