Jazzle, thanks for getting me back into modelling items in sketchup again

This took me several hours, three of which were for the top curved section.

sketchup really, really needs a chamfer, and fillet command ><

i was jw tho.. if you could explain how you fillet'd the edges ( if you did it how im thinking you did it, you musta been glad to get it over with, lol )

 

First of all, understand that I had to do it twice. The original curve had too many sections as it was a single curve. The second time, the curve was a half circle divided in half meaning less faces and was easier for sketchup to render (such small faces sometimes don't appear, like with my 7.62mm bullet model).

After recessing the faces for the metal clips a second time, I started the curves a second time. You have to take the top face, and offset it (by the radius of your chamfer which was 2mm here). Then you push/pull it upwards by the same value. At this point you can remove the vertical faces created as you won't see them.

At the endpoint of each curve section (which needs to be exploded into individual straight lines), draw a curve at a tangent to the top face down to the same point on the larger circle (which was the original face). Explode this arc and clone it using the rotate tool with the CTRL key held down. Make sure you clone around the centre of the top face (which is a circle). You will have two arcs now and you have to join up the points to make each individual face. Once you've done this, you have to clone the entire section however many times your circle or curve has. You can then select these faces and soften the edges to create a smooth edge.

Sound awkward? It is, but it's harder to explain than it is to do. Took me a while to figure out if this could be done or not. I had to do it on my 7.62mm rounds and my radiator.

I made a simple crap version and im happy enough with it, but it would be nice to have a sweet version like some of the other mobos in this thread.

It's not the exact size, I have downloaded the originally posted one and decided to make one that was tileable.

No really, it's less than half a millimeter out, but it is not the same


Diamond mesh, 100% tileable by duplicating.

 

ya I did my best to make the hexmesh exact size, from specs on the page that sells it.

but tileable i did not do, and tileable is the only way.

I thought jazzle meant mine was the exact size as the one in the first post. The entire component can be resized by one hole width anyway.

it should be done today, since it turns out im not busy, and shouldnt be pretty much all day

 

Modelled this ages ago. Just converted it to Sketchup 3.0 and smoothed the pins off.
