Well then - I guess we must have had an upgrade to the family PC in 2000 as we had ME, so
    From:
    Local Build
    Windows 95
    200MHz ? Pentium?
    64MB RAM
CD drive (that was a later add on)
    56K Modem

    To
    Local Build
    Windows ME
    733MHz P3
    128Mb RAM
    CD re-writer
56K Modem (probably had other, unused networking stuffs)
A 32MB ATI card, I think it was one of the "all in wonder" ones.

We stuck on dial up until summer 2005, and still have the same 512K broadband that we got then. Thankfully unlimited but seeing as the line can get 3-4 times that a bit frustrating. My dad (by no means technically minded) can't understand why my mum is so against upgrading!!

    Now:
    Self built
i7 920, Intel x58 motherboard (cheap thanks to Bindi, haven't tried overclocking yet but not holding my breath!) 6GB DDR3, 8800GTS, Hiper 580W PSU in a rather old CM stacker that I am hoping to replace for my birthday :D

Uh... back in 2000, my family was still sporting only a single, old, P1 PC
If I remember correctly, my dad's build was a Pentium 133, with a huge (for the time it was made, and that was... 97 or so) 64 MB of memory.
The drives were... A Bigfoot of about 2 GB (in some crazy thin 5.25" format) and a 3.5" drive with about 6 GB of space.
Had a Creative Sound Blaster card, an internal (and later, external) 56k modem, and for a time, a Matrox something or other 3D add in card. If I remeber correctly, it was just a headless PCI card, the video output was done by a lonely S3 Trio or Trident card that I _think_ I still have around here somewhere.
I remeber the CD drive was something with a tray that needed to be pushed back in by hand, no motor :D The 3.5" Floppy was a must, as was a 100 MB iOmega Zip drive, hooked up to a parallel port, along with an HP inkjet printer.
The screen was a 14" Phillips CRT, 800*600 resolution, that I still have in my attic :)

Ah, this takes me back :D

Today, I have 11 working computers in my house. The main rig is in my sig :)

    1995:

A beige Compaq All-in-one (Monitor and PC guts built into one enclosure, pretty nifty for the time)

About 486DX, 16MB ram, Windows 3.1 with Tabworks, later upgraded to Win 95. Oh and a QUAD speed Cd-rom - very quick for the time. ES Audiodrive Soundcard. About all I can remember.

    1998:

A BLACK, yes BLACK (everyone that saw it went wooooooo, bllaacck) Fujitsu PC from Toys R Us

Pentium II (i think) MMX, about 300/400MHz
    128MB Ram
10GB HDD (very very noisey and rattley)
Savage 3D card of some form

    33.6K Modem LOL

Oh, and a keyboard with a built in mouse 'nipple' that i killed on purpose within 2 weeks of it being new so we could get a proper mouse and keyboard.

    2000:

400MHz Daewoo branded PC bought from Toys R us again, wasn't a bad little machine actually. Last shop bought PC the family owned. Now my parents, brother, grandparents, uncle, and now great aunty all use computers i built for them, made me feel quite proud to have a little fleet of my own creation out there somewhere.

    2009:

    E7400
    4GB Ram
    Samsung 1TB F1
    Ati 5770

Those of you who say they had Windows XP back in 2000, you must have had it a year early or were beta testing, XP didn't come out till October 2001.

Anyway back in 2000 I had

    Pentium II 350 OC'd to 433
    Gigabyte GA6BXC
    256 Meg of PC133 Ram
    16 Meg Voodoo 3 2000 AGP
    Soundblaster Live Value
32 Speed LG CD Rom Drive
    6 x 2 x 2 CD RE-Writer
20 Gig 7200 RPM Samsung Hard Drive
8.4 Gig Fujitsu 5400 RPM HDD for storage
15 Inch Iiyama Vision Master Pro CRT
    250 watt Macron PSU.
Windows 98 SE, and Windows 2000 Pro dual boot

    Now

    AMD Athlon X2 5600 2.8 GHz Stock
    Asus M3A78-T
    4 Gig DDR2
    ATI Radeon 4850 1 Gig
    LG DVD Burner
    2 TB's HDD space
    20 Inch Samsung SM2053BW
500 Watt OCZ stealth stream PSU
    Windows 7 HP 64 bit.

Out of all the PC's I've had the one I miss the most is that PII believe it or not.

If you really want me to I can post all the specs of all the PC's I've had personally since 1996 !!

    2000 - one system:

1.2Ghz Athlon (or could have been a 1.4 P4 at that time)
Can't remember the AMD board, or could have been an Intel i850 board
    40GB 7200rpm IDE HDD
    18GB 10k SCSI drive
    Adaptec U160 SCSI card
256MB SDRAM (or maybe 512MB RDRAM by then)
Sound Blaster Live of some description
    Geforce 2 GTS
    19" CTX PR960F
    2X CD writer
    8X DVD
    Cinemaster MPEG decoder card
    Win2k

    Now - 6 systems:

    Laptop: Dell M1330, Intel T9300, 4GB DDR2 800, 320GB 7200rpm
    Desktop: AMD 955be, Asus 785G, 4GB DDR3 1600, 1TB HDD, 8x BluRay, 22"+ 19" LCD
    Work Laptop: Dell D630, Intel T7300, 2GB DDR2 800, 80GB 7200RPM
    Spare Laptop: Compaq X1000, 1.7GHz Dothan, 1GB DDR 333, 60GB 7200rpm, ATI 9200
    Main HTPC: AMD 4850e, Gigabyte 780G, 2GB DDR2 800, 3x 1TB HDD
Second HTPC (music only): Dothan 1.7GHz, aopen i855, 1GB DDR 400, 40GB SSD

    In 2000 I probably had a
    Pentium II 266Mhz
    64Mb of ram
    HP cd-writer
    Slot Load cd-rom reader
A 40Gb Maxtor Hdd (Of which the motherboard only recognized 8 :(, Originally it had a 4GB drive.)
    A 17"CRT (a bit later I won a 15" Philips TFT )
    Windows 98

    Now

    Intel E8400 @3.6Ghz
    DFI LanParty DK P45-T2RS PLUS
    4Gb Corsair Dominator DDR2
    8800GT
    Asus Xonar D2X
    Lite-on DVD burner
    60GB OCZ SSD + 500Gb WD + 500Gb WD
    24" HP W2408
    Corsair HX520
    Windows 7 HP 64 bit.

The Pentium II was pretty nice, and I still have it standing around here. It was just really annoying that I spent Fl200,- for a 40Gb Hdd, when I could only use 8Gb. With a full install of Baldur's Gate II there wasn't much room left. :D

Secondary system is a laptop: Asus EeePc 1000H

Now, lots (including the one above upgraded to about 2002 vintage), but "new"est:

    AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ (939)
Sapphire Radeon HD 2600XT Ultimate Edition
    2GB PC3200
Vista Home Premium (but not for long)
    in a Silverstone GDO2

    Finally found it!!!

A picture of the rig I was using in late 1999. I upgraded to AMD XP system in August 2000.

I forget why I took this pic now... but it was a multiple exposure studio shot on 5x4 film. Since lost the original transparency, and this is the only surviving digital copy... very low res unfortunately :(

I think I posted specs earlier on in the thread.... it was a Pentium 200MMX

    Current rig as sig.

It's fine for my purposes, i.e. slightly older games and media centre duties.
I don't really have the inclination to try it with newer games, but I imagine it would struggle quite badly with anything approaching decent settings/resolutions.

No Prescott P4s until 2004. In late 2002 there were some Northwoods at ~3GHz, but I doubt they'd hit shelves until the very end, and if they did, they must've cost a pretty penny. :eeek:
