Well then - I guess we must have had an upgrade to the family PC in 2000 as we had ME, so

A 32MB ATI card, I think it was one of the "all in wonder" ones.

We stuck on dial up until summer 2005, and still have the same 512K broadband that we got then. Thankfully unlimited but seeing as the line can get 3-4 times that a bit frustrating. My dad (by no means technically minded) can't understand why my mum is so against upgrading!!

i7 920, Intel x58 motherboard (cheap thanks to Bindi, haven't tried overclocking yet but not holding my breath!) 6GB DDR3, 8800GTS, Hiper 580W PSU in a rather old CM stacker that I am hoping to replace for my birthday

 

Uh... back in 2000, my family was still sporting only a single, old, P1 PC
If I remember correctly, my dad's build was a Pentium 133, with a huge (for the time it was made, and that was... 97 or so) 64 MB of memory.
The drives were... A Bigfoot of about 2 GB (in some crazy thin 5.25" format) and a 3.5" drive with about 6 GB of space.
Had a Creative Sound Blaster card, an internal (and later, external) 56k modem, and for a time, a Matrox something or other 3D add in card. If I remeber correctly, it was just a headless PCI card, the video output was done by a lonely S3 Trio or Trident card that I _think_ I still have around here somewhere.
I remeber the CD drive was something with a tray that needed to be pushed back in by hand, no motor The 3.5" Floppy was a must, as was a 100 MB iOmega Zip drive, hooked up to a parallel port, along with an HP inkjet printer.
The screen was a 14" Phillips CRT, 800*600 resolution, that I still have in my attic

1995:

A beige Compaq All-in-one (Monitor and PC guts built into one enclosure, pretty nifty for the time)

About 486DX, 16MB ram, Windows 3.1 with Tabworks, later upgraded to Win 95. Oh and a QUAD speed Cd-rom - very quick for the time. ES Audiodrive Soundcard. About all I can remember.

1998:

A BLACK, yes BLACK (everyone that saw it went wooooooo, bllaacck) Fujitsu PC from Toys R Us

Pentium II (i think) MMX, about 300/400MHz
128MB Ram
10GB HDD (very very noisey and rattley)
Savage 3D card of some form

33.6K Modem LOL

Oh, and a keyboard with a built in mouse 'nipple' that i killed on purpose within 2 weeks of it being new so we could get a proper mouse and keyboard.

2000:

400MHz Daewoo branded PC bought from Toys R us again, wasn't a bad little machine actually. Last shop bought PC the family owned. Now my parents, brother, grandparents, uncle, and now great aunty all use computers i built for them, made me feel quite proud to have a little fleet of my own creation out there somewhere.

2009:

The Pentium II was pretty nice, and I still have it standing around here. It was just really annoying that I spent Fl200,- for a 40Gb Hdd, when I could only use 8Gb. With a full install of Baldur's Gate II there wasn't much room left.

Finally found it!!!

A picture of the rig I was using in late 1999. I upgraded to AMD XP system in August 2000.

I forget why I took this pic now... but it was a multiple exposure studio shot on 5x4 film. Since lost the original transparency, and this is the only surviving digital copy... very low res unfortunately

I still use a keyboard similar to that, they are alot better than these new flimsy ones.

 

It's fine for my purposes, i.e. slightly older games and media centre duties.
I don't really have the inclination to try it with newer games, but I imagine it would struggle quite badly with anything approaching decent settings/resolutions.

 

Well I cant to Y2k because I cant remember my hardware back that far, I think I had a p4 prebuilt with a matrox parhelia VGA.

No Prescott P4s until 2004. In late 2002 there were some Northwoods at ~3GHz, but I doubt they'd hit shelves until the very end, and if they did, they must've cost a pretty penny.

 

think was k6-2 with a peltier had bought at a computer show I even made the 'golden fingers' for it to adjust the voltage on the slot a
