You know I really like Noctua stuff, but the color of the fans makes me gag.

Wow! I got a big response tis time. Thanks, everyone! I take it you like to see finished parts too.
@MOJ - #3030-Glass Green. They sell it in sheets up to an inch thick, too.
@Oldnewby - If I do this right, the Noctuas will be the only thing not blue or glass green, (or black.) I thought a bit of color would be good.
@H2O - I don't think they'll catch on. It took a 7 x 30" sheet just to make the fins, and there's a ton of edge cleanup involved.
@Azayles - The whole case should look like that when I'm done.

 

Cheap! What's your procedure for polishing your acrylic? Is it friendly to big and unwieldy parts?

im sure he uses a buffing wheel. i've got a pretty cheap one and WOW it works amazing.

That's gonna look stunning! People are gonna be so concerned of its fragility, thinking it's all made from glass. Hope it doesn't pick up too many (any) scratches or finger prints, I'd be so worried about having that computer as anything other than an art piece, safely boxed away behind a display case, security lasers and all.

@Achron - I have a 10" muslin buffing wheel. The unsewn version works pretty good. It doesn't catch edges and dig in like the harder sewn ones do. For hard to reach areas I make my own felt polishing discs for the dremel. For crevices I use felt, Novus polish, and a pointed stick. -Finish everything up with Novus on a CD cleaner sheet.
In your case, you might have to stick to hand polishing. If you put your assembled rig to a buffer, you will find the plastic coming off faster than the aluminum. You'd end up with it enhancing the seams.

Such a shame to hide such glory under a desk! Needs to be on some sort of huge perspex plinth or something

 

Thanks for the tips. I figured on simply polishing the acrylic alone, since the aluminum will be anodized anyway. Did you sand the acrylic before you polished it? I was thinking of going up to about 800 before starting to polish.

 

I start with 150 and work down to 600. 800 sounds good if you hand polish it.
@Azayles - My desk is already creaking. Computer #4 might kill it, or crack the entire corner off the house.

 

Dam!! your skills with the plexi is amazing. I know it's just the beginning of the year, but this is looking like MOTY already even MDPC for sure.
Your build is impecable so far. keep up the great modding.

I do admire your patience with polishing - I think that could end up being one of my pitfalls..

One thing I have thought about though - what about flamepolishing the stuff? I haven't tried it myself but I do recall seeing a video on it and the result was very close to the finish you achieved by sanding and buffing (I think it was mnpctech who did it some time ago)..
