Case Mod - In Progress Purple Rain / CustomPC 'Readers Drives' - Issue 81 / Apr '10

Time to get this finished, at long last !

After the disaster of the failing motherboard, everything had to be stripped out.

Gave me a chance to sneak a small upgrade in

So now its an Asus Maximus II Formula with a QX6850 chip.

Damaged the perspex rad shroud during the strip down, so that has gone.

Not such a problem as it was kinda dark, so it gave me the option to get some light in there via some extra fans:





Button head bolts and dome nuts for fixings.

New CPU block has been added, probably the nicest looking 775 block that i've seen, a Swiftech Apogee XT Extreme Performance CPU waterblock Rev 2.

 

At the moment it sat on the kitchen table, with 2 china cats for company





Just waiting on a Mips NB block from Germany before i can finish the loop, as the Swiftech one i was going to use soaked me and the mobo when i plumbed it in, dodgy thread i think.



A rough idea of what the reservoirs will look like, excuse the dust and stuff - Still needs a decent polish ;



Lastly, something for the top window, a name



Printed onto the back of some window frosting film it will give the effect of etching on the inside of the acrylic window.



Just need to have a steady hand cutting it out with my scalpel.

I liked your mod both ways. The original white tubing and the modified look. I keep seeing guys put pictures on the mod threads and say..it reminds me of this... I say. SO WHAT. Not all of the mods are exactly alike and the use of color is always repeated. I am going to do another mod where at least 3 good mods are on the web using the same theme, I dont want to be compared to them either. They all had visual appeal. I like your work.

Oh wait, whoa... you printed the words onto window frosting material... how do you print it? Is that a laser printer? ink jet? I think it's fantastic!

Unless you are doing a scratch build, then you are bound to be compared as its the same case or colour or fans as others are using.
How you put it together is the individual part.
Until you're able to fabricate everything yourself then people can always draw comparisons to other builds.
Is doesn't bother me either, i just enjoy building, and i try and introduce some individuality along the way.

The braided tubes, whilst still an idea i will use again, were blending in too much with the inside of the casea it was getting too dark. The white brightens things up.

An idea i had to look like etching, first go at it.

Printed onto the backing with a standard inkjet, but because the backing was slightly plastic the ink didn't dry. This made the cutting very messy as the ink was virtually wet.

A laser printer may be better, or just print to paper and stencil around that.

Just an experiment really, but it turned out OK i think

I soooo want a MM case for my next hex-core project but not sure the funds will allow it!
