Just builing a new system and so I was wondering which is the best, free anti-virus software ?
I know AVG have an extremely good piece of software ( I'm using it right now !) I'm just wondering if there is any other programs I should know. Thanks in advance ! :thumb:

I use avast on most of my systems except my main gaming rig. Never really come across many issues.

Could be its not detecting them or I'm being really sensible in what I do.

Avast the best for me. Uses minimal resources, unintrusive and works very well... am yet to have a virus. Used to use AVG until they started releasing their later versions... they suddenly started hogging RAM and was just impractical for a gaming system.

This topic was talked a lot about. MSE is the winner from public opinion here on this forum.
    Next time use the search.

I used to use AVG but moved to Avast.

Although, I might change back since Avast is getting more intrusive. I recently installed it to a new Windows 7 build, and it installed a status gadget that loaded at startup and proved to be quite difficult to remove.

I've never heard of MCE but will give it a try.

What worries me is how GoodBytes calls it unintuitive, lol.

I'm sorry I about all the other threads ! I looked for another one briefly bit couldn't find one !

    :sigh:

Anyway, I see its divided between Avast and MSE. I'll have a look at them both !

    Thanks !

Avira Antivir free edition has been my choice for quite some time now. There's a single Avira pop up advert with each update but one click and it's gone. Worth it for the freeness.

    AHHHhhhh pineapple! It's a typo!
What I mean is not-intrusive. There.

MSE is better then slice bread. I don't like Avira, and I don't like AVG.
AVG is too heavy, and slows drastically the boot time of Windows... like if it does a virus check at that moment. Really annoying. Since than, and the annoying "buy the pro" ad, made me really hate it. AVG was good in the good old day. Now, it did everything it can to lose what was great about it. Also, it slows drastically my compilation time of my programming project.

I changed from Avast to MSE. It's lighter and less intrusive. Not that the latest versions of Avast are very intrusive.

I don't know, this is the first thread that Avira wins in vote. The others where all MSE without exception. Well nothing stops you from trying both (not at the same time of course).
