Hello. After long reflection, I concluded that I will not once again integrate the server with my home computer. So it is time to make a small, home server once again. Short predictable specification. Processor - Centrino CD - ThinkPad R51, a colleague that one used in the Steam & Current project. Drives - minimum 2x320GB Array, because such I use now. It is possible that there will be more drives. Material: Wood - mirabelle plum (Prunus domestica) and cherry. It is possible that it will use the false acacia (Robinia pseudoacacia). Brass once again to. So as you can see it's a standard for me (I hope that soon this will change Here are pictures of sawn timber. I gave a different light to show colour and wood grain. Yesterday I cut a rough outline of matrix attachment. I've also cut a place to settle the keyboard. It's all for today.
Just wondering how your going to attach that keyboard to the computer. Don't think I've ever seen a laptop keyboard recycled in such a way as this.
I will try to add the changes as often as possible, even if they are small. For today: I've sanded keyboard. And I'm still playing with a front.
Scratch Build Organic II - home linux server 21.06 Little work progress. I've linked the future keyboard with the front. After testing several options for positioning the motherboard I decided to put it partially under the keyboard. The second part with the processor will be mounted into LCD panel case. As you can see at this stage, still nothing spectacular.

Very unique! I like the rough look that you are giving it so far. Will this be placed on a desk, hang from a wall, or stand on it's own? Keep modding!
In the end it wont be so rough (at least I hope so). And you said hanging on the wall. Hmm.... It's worth considering. That's why I like working without any plans only with an idea in my head. I can change everything very rapidly.
I've glued sidewalls and little sanded and cut. Unfortunately, my dremel just died. I'm waiting for a new one.
I love the keyboard it reminds me of a tourist information place we have here, just obviously little less sleek lol.

what distro, what serivices? hardware / software raid, etc. The build is mos def unique, almost kiosk like...following w/ interest.
For years now I'm using Suse. Earlier it was redhat and debian. It's connected in my local network. Mostly it's a file server, downloader and www test server locally. Of course ftp, www, etc. from outside world. Hardware now - Pentium II 800 Compaq Armada m700, it will be centrino 1700 IBM Thinkpad R51. Raid - only software. I don't need speed. Only safety. And you know what happens, when Raid Card is broken, and you don't have a spare. Now I'm using 2x320gb samsung 2,5" disks.
lol, alot of foul language and a rapid shift to BSD and ZFS Good to see such a unique build powered by FLOSS software. How does the hardware hold up against the OS and services loaded on it? I love the 'kiosk' shape and the unique style of your builds and using a laptop in such a way is great. Not many OS's are flexible enough to allow (such) old hardware to remain useful.
15 years ago I was using 386 as a file server . And it was doing just fine. Now of course I have many more services running. But even PII 800 is fine. I don't need to change it. But I want to use it as a part of "intelligent house" system. Then I will probably need more power. IMHO laptops are very good in role of a server. First - little power consumption. And they are working 24/7. Second - better motherboard design. For example there are almost no capacitors. Third - CPU is designed to work in harder temperature conditions. Fourth - all system with a screen is integrated in one piece.
