    PCI-E 3.0 is supported by X79 motherboards, but it's unlikely to be officially supported by Sandy Bridge-E. Rather, Ivy Bridge-E will probably feature all the missing goodies we wanted from the upcoming CPUs :thumb:

    My Bad... was thinking ordinary IB. Well.. that's not too bad then. Still.. I Was hoping for more from SB-E.

    Well, Ivy Bridge also supports PCI-E 3.0 :D

    I agree though, but we've got to remember this chipset is aimed at workstation users, not just gamers. They haven't really got a use for 3.0.

    I need a rig for both uses. I game, and I do heavy image and video work. I suppose, even if clock for clock, SB-E on a core for core basis is no stronger than SB, I still have a bandwidth advantage. It just seems an expansive advantage at the moment.

    I cannot comment on PCIe 3.0 sorry. CPU features are NDAd. Motherboards are fine.

    Like LGA1366 and 1155, I expect LGA2011 to be a 3-year socket. I've not seen roadmaps though (honestly, that's not just a statement to get out of NDA :p), but that's what Intel has always been alluding to whenever it talked high-end because X79 and X58 are really aimed at entry-level server, and you don't go changing server stuff quickly. Of course, nothing is announced until it's announced!!

    So I don't know that much about raid and onboard controllers but have a question about these new boards:
    From what I may have read in this thread the new boards are having 4 x sata III ports? but in pairs on separate controllers?
    Does this limit us to (for example) two separate raid 0 arrays but making something like 4 x sata III drives in raid 0 not possible?

    Sorry if I just didn't read things correct or don't understand raid enough ;)

    They are two separate SATA 6G controllers. You could do it, but it would be in Windows via software.

    Ok, don't know if anybody checks here any more. Nonetheless I found another m-ATX board. This time it is from MSI

    MSI X79AM-GD45

    BTW it only supports 1.5v memory.

    think i saw that on scan the other day, bloody amazed they managed to get all that on an m-ATX board, I seem to remember bindi said that asus won't be doing an m-Atx board i.e. the Asus Gene, because it was to complicated or something along those lines.

    yay... more info on the Rampage IV Gene motherboard

    seems to be that it will be 4 channels of RAM only (down from 6 in the R II/III Gene). still you can pack that LGA 2011 proc on to that small space so I guess its ok...

    also loving the chunky heatsinks...although I question the position of the 3rd SATA port on the bottom right of the motherboard.
