I'm not benching my M4, but I only bought it a month or two ago and it's my new favourite component. Real world usage is amazing!
I got my samsung 830 the other week. Just benched it, I'm also running on SATA2 still (trusty old Q6600 is still fine for me). I've noticed a massive improvement in startup/boot, and game/map loading times are excellent (BF3, almost no wait for map changes).
Yes indeedy - already had a weekly backup on the boot drive, but I'll be configuring Acronis (free copy with the drive!) for nightly updated backups... Just because really! Also updated my oh-so-pointless Windows Experience Index - nice to see a solid 7+ for everything now too.
OOooo, thats good news - I hope I get a copy with my drive(s). I havent opened the package it arrived in yet because its meant to be for my birthday next month and my misses wont let me! Spoil sport
Your SATA 2 isn't limiting your really world performance of your SSD. That mater is random read and write or small files. The rest, unless you transfer or work with several hundred of MB files, your SATA controller won't limit your SSD performance. Anyway, for reference purposes, here is my Vertex 4 256GB on the Intel SATA 2 controller (I made dual partition, if you wonder why I did it on the D:\ drive). Goodbytes... Gigabyte list your board as having 8x SATA-3 ports? Don't get me wrong - it's fast, but it's always nice to see controller maxing out hardware, rather than the other way.
get away from sequential reads and into real world useage , and as he said - sata 2 wont be maxed anyway
I joined the club and bought a Crucial v4 last week. Not got around to installing it yet. Will do it soon!
Congrats Krikkit. I've found the best part about my SSD is that I don't get that slow down of windows after a month or two of instantiation.
Im on my 2nd SSD 120 to a 240. Both Corsair Force 3's and read/write is the same. Just bought it for the larger size/price drop. I came from a Sata 3 HDD. And the short loading time on everything is amazing. I love joining a BF3 server and being in a vehicle before half the team!
That's part of my reason as well - my windows install is about... 3 years old? I really can't be arsed installing all those apps etc and getting it configured how I like again, so I'll just keep it as long as possible. The slowdown has really plateau'd now, so I'm happy.
The SATA 3 port is from the added Marvel controller. Sadly the brilliant.. no genius guys at Marvel thought that putting their SATA 3 chip.. which reached 6Gbps, on PCI-E 1x is all good. Well if you do the math, PCI-E 1x is SATA 2 speeds. Plus, because the chips is further away from the CPU, well latency is increased, so I lose performance on small files, and the max speed is bellow the Intel controller. So I got screwed over, like all X58 owners, because they pretty all uses this Marvel chip, unless you got the newer motherboard at the end of the life of X58 chipset.
