Now there's a familiar story. I was by no means the smartest kid in school, but I did consistently well and was usually in the top 10-15% of a large year group. I could have done far better if my teachers had been anywhere close to something you could call engaging, or if I'd paid more attention to the things that didn't really interest me... but that's a different rant. I had the same thing though: I got picked on a lot because I was seen as "clever" or "nerdy", and I was always taught to "tough it out, ignore it, and just get on with it". That really didn't help. All that did was help normalise the idea that being intelligent and doing well in school is something that should be avoided and mocked. I ****ing hated school, there are few good experiences that I can recall about that ****hole (obviously the fact that I left 18 years ago doesn't help here). I made some good friends there, but that was about it.

Not trying to tell you how to raise your kids here; you know what's best, and I'm just some random on the internet. But having gone through similar challenges in school I'm not sure how I'd handle the situation as a father.

Someones dinged my car and i'm pretty bummed about it.

Its got stone chips on it and marks but nothing noticeable

I can't explain the damage but the skirt had a notch clearly taken out of it, its been hit with something and i can't exactly tell what. Its not massive but you can clearly see the black underneath. On a white car... yeah its noticeable from a distant.

I can't tell if it was deliberate but i can't explain how it happened, recently a new family moved up the road from us (I'll be honest we live in a rough area) and their (1000) kids spend most of their evenings running up and down the road causing trouble with sticks and objects (They're between 7-11 so not that kind of trouble) I've been forced to park close to their house recently and they've taken a lot of interest in the car (positive interest) i suspect it was just a childish game that ended with something falling into the skirt and causing the damage. I'm not going to point any fingers on this occasion and maybe just use the opportunity to go to a body shop and talk about the stone chips at the same time.

Its just not nice... I've worked hard to have this car. I don't expect it to stay spotless but i'd like the age/damage caused to come from myself.

I smacked my head earlier and gave myself a Concussion. Only in the last hour have I felt kind of okay. I'm still feeling pretty dizzy.

Agreed with Byron, very tricky to deal with. I had similar in school - the way my parents got me through it was pointing out very diplomatically that I'd be in a far better position when I was older. Turns out they were right, and the thought that I would damn well do better really helped.

I found the whole attitude changes once you get to college. People actually want to learn there. Or maybe it was my attitude that changed. Either way she'll find her situation easier as she gets older.

The main thing is she maintains her academic standards. Its very easy to stop working or engaging in order to get her peers to ease up. Kids tend to be short sighted as well, making that option more appealing than toughing it out for a few years.

I know she can go really far - there isn't a damn thing she isn't automatically good at. She recently tried piano lessons, picked up the rhythm in one lesson. Strange thing with her is that she doesn't have one solid interest. She does swimming and she's at stage 5, which at 7 she finds intimidating since she shares a lesson with pre-teens since she picks it up so quickly. But she doesn't have one interest that she's really serious about like science, medicine or anything like that.

I've explained to her what school is like and how some people can feel, but I think it's because she's in year 3 and the work is more serious and they get more praise for doing well, rather than everyone getting praised just for trying.

In other news though, my head really damn hurts still. I have a concussion but it's apparently not too serious, I just need to take it easy and not move too fast since i'm getting dizzy easily.

Car's back from the garage. They have no idea what's wrong with it, and it smoked like a chimney on the short drive home. Better still, the smoke is clogging the DPF; the regen light is flashing, so it's heading to the motorway at some point today for a thrashing.

Think I may have to cut my losses, ditch the thing and buy something else. With a petrol engine, for preference!

The car? 2006 Vauxhall Meriva A 1.3 CDTi, which we've only had a couple of months. Guess I know why it was traded in now, eh?

Yeah that engine is a bit of a dog from what I read when looking to buy a new car for the Mrs a while ago.

A dealer actively told us to avoid the diesel 1.3 when looking at a new Corsa, mentioned tons of dpf issues...

On a more useful note if the garage you have used are obviously no use see if you can find a diesel specialist rather than a normo garage.

    **** Windows 10
My laptop's stuck on the "Getting Windows ready. Don't turn off your computer" screen (and of course it didn't mention anything about updates beforehand). If only they would provide the option of log messages so I could at least see what it's trying, and failing, to do...
This is the straw that broke the camel's back. My steadily built-up frustration with W10 is finally eclipsing my laziness. I'll wait until this evening to see if it somehow does manage to finish updating, but regardless of whether it succeeds, the partition will be nuked from orbit reformatted and replaced by comfy old Windows 7 again.
Reinstalling everything will no doubt be a PITA, but I'm looking forward to it. :)

Trouble with the little diesel engines they need longer runs to clear the DPF but they are horrible at doing longer journeys because the engines are so small, most end up as city cars and clog up. May be worth sucking the cost an getting the 1.7 diesel. If its an old shape Meriva the lump is an Izusu one which is nigh on impossible to kill. That or swap to the 1.4 petrol, the 1.6 and rare 1.8's are quite pricey to keep running and only give around a 20BHP improvement in power.

That's good advice, cheers! I was already thinking about swapping it for the 1.4 petrol, but I didn't know the 1.7 diesel was one to consider.

The good news is that a run up the motorway in fourth has cleared the DPF, and a bottle of Wynn's Stop Smoke seems to have cleared the smoke (for now, anyway). The big test will be driving it from cold tomorrow - but fingers crossed I can eke a bit more life out of the thing!
