Yep i have to agree. when i work with gloves i pick fingerless gloves instead. be conscious of your sense of touch to your work environment! Safety first!

It's really dangerous to drill through 8 thick aluminum sheets without gloves, believe me.

I got the flu, so no updates this weekend... I'll try to continue tomorrow.

 

The whole gloves argument is kind of "damned if you do, damned if you don't", though personally I'd have to agree with no gloves near spinning bits or blades! If your parts are properly clamped your fingers shouldn't need to be anywhere near.

Either way, that aside, very interesting start I really like those little "pac-mac" brackets as you called them. Will be watching!

Now the gloves... As big a as can be!

Clamping is of course the best way to go, but when it's not possible...



Aluminum get's hot, nevermind that.

Shavings can cut you a bit, nothing that can't be sewed if worst case should happen.

If you can't hold on to it, it'll slap you on your fingers!

If you are REALLY unlucky and get caught, it'll break a finger!

If that ******* catches your glove and the drill doesn't break... You are lucky to escape with a broken wrist!

As for fingers in a too small piece in a lathe... Don't! Some might remember when I made the first res for my G5... Got my pinky caught and got the deathroll like no crocodile could have done it. It's still there, but not looking nice and it still hurts from time to time...

I daren't even think of the consequense had I worn gloves...

if your worried about the workpiece spinning while your using your drill press then you need to change how you drill/clamp your piece. Use a working fluid to help keep both your metal and your bit cool so they don't start fusing together, and also don't drill such long stretches at once. Do something of a pecking action, remove some material, back it off, remove some material, back it off, and allowing the chips to clear when you back off your bit should help remove heat from the cutter. Each little chip acts like a little heatsink. One piece of advice though, don't wear nylon or fleece clothing while milling metals because if the chips get hot it can melt your clothes (I have experience with this ).

Also clamping down some bracing around the edges of your workpiece just incase might be a good idea if thats possible.

Lastly placing a thin piece of rubber between your clamp and your workpiece to increase the static friction between your workpiece and the clamp. Using a strip off an old bike tube or something would probably work just fine.

Gloves are a serious no-no for the reasons listed above. Take the advice as you will mate, but nobody wants to see that kind of accident result from something awesome like modding.
