I have to say that i have doubts about the final result. I think that the heatshink wiil work better in horizontal position than in vertical.
thanks.. and sticking to your opinion is only a god thing Yes maybe your right about that. But by putting it vertical themboard will be placed below the heatsink and I hava a feeling that this might entrap the heat and heat up the heatsink from below. However, It's easy to find out once I get it up and running since I only need to flip it over. Eitherway, this case is designed to be horizontal but I will make some tests for shure.
Hello again. So.. now things are really comming together. Today it's time for a test run. But before that. I will show you whats been done since last update. First of is the heatsink plate, here you see the threaded holes to that the heatpipe blocks will be mounted to. (CLICK TO ZOOM) I also needed to clean up the edges of all the other holes. Done by hand with this tool. (CLICK TO ZOOM) (CLICK TO ZOOM) This is the backside of the plate and since this is the place were all the screw heads willl be, I decided to countersunk the holes to make the screws flush witht the rest of the plate. (CLICK TO ZOOM) (CLICK TO ZOOM) The countersinking resultet in the screws being to long. Since I couldn't find the right size in any store around, I took some long ones and milled them down. (CLICK TO ZOOM) (CLICK TO ZOOM) (CLICK TO ZOOM) Since this is only a testing of the cooling I didn't want to smear thermal paste all over the parts since that would have cost a lot. Instead I used a small amount of regular cooking oil. I the final mounting I will use real thermal paste. Deffinetly not the best solution but atleast it's better than nothing. (CLICK TO ZOOM) I Found these motherboard stand offs in my box of goddies, I think they were delivered with the zotac mboard but I'm not shure. Anyway the mboard holes interfered with some of the other holes on the heatsink so I had to make these small pieces that allso acts as spacers. (CLICK TO ZOOM) (CLICK TO ZOOM) (CLICK TO ZOOM) (CLICK TO ZOOM) I also fabricated 2 more blocks for the heatpipes. Same procedure as the previous blocks. (CLICK TO ZOOM) I also added two more mountingholes in the middle on the previous heatpipeblocks. (CLICK TO ZOOM) (CLICK TO ZOOM) (CLICK TO ZOOM) (CLICK TO ZOOM) I really like these mboard fasteners. (CLICK TO ZOOM) (CLICK TO ZOOM) The moment of truth has come. It's time to power this thing on. Above you can see the current setup, in all it's standard desktop testing fashion. The knife?? it's the powerswitch. So I turn it on and then....nothing happens, not a single sign of life. Crap is my first thought, I mentaly start to go through all the steps to see if there is anything I forgot. I fear the worst that I somhow killed the mboard by static or something. Suddenly a desktop pops up on the screen. YAY...It works!! I had totally forgot that I had built a deadsilent pc I was expecting some kind of noice but now there was only silence to be heard. It's currently running fine next to me and I'm measuring the temps of to see how well the heatsink performs. I will show the results once I get some nice and stable temps

Happens to me with my Zotac aswell every so often, when I forget to turn on the screen. Immediately I think... WTF? Is it dead yet? Damn those deadsilent systems
Thanks.. easy now.. im trying to sumarize the temps. Haha nice. Well the temps rose pretty fast in the beginning of the test but seems to starting to stabilize at the moment. I'm trying to make some nice charts. Yeah I can totaly see this as a future problem. I will definetly need to incorporate som LEDs or something
I really hope the temps stabalise to a good temp, this project is too awesome to be let down by that, fingers crossed . The silence would be odd for a pc but an awesome welcome .
Thanks.. mee too. Maybe youv'e also noticed that there is only 3 heatpipes in the current setup. The 4th heatpipe will be put on the back of the case (not made yet) so there will be even more surface area in the finished setup.
Excellent so far! I 'm waiting for your temps too, in vertical and horizontal position. Question: What is this hole for? I think you should insulate the mobo from the aluminium heat on the back, especially here where they get too close: About static electricity: You must connect the heatshink with the case through a ground wire when you finish.
So true. I spoke to the anodizer last week and he told me he had the colors and would gladly help me. Just to stop by when I'm ready. Yep, Aluminium all the way. Thanks for your nice pictures. I will try the case in horizontal position tomorrow. It'll be nice to see if theres a difference. The hole your pointing at is for the 4th and last heatpipe. At first I planned to have this under the mobo as the three others but decided to have it above the mobo instead. It will connect to the aluplate that will encase all the components on the backside and complete the case. This way I will get even more surface area to disipate the heat. About the insulation: I don't think I will need to insulate because of the heat but I will put a layer of thin plexi or similar just to make shure the mobo don't short with the heatsink blocks. The mobo is already grounded to the heatsink with the mobospacers so I won't need any more wire.
