very small update, i thought id give my hand a shot at making a fan grill out of wood. so i found a nice scrap in my dad's workroom. I printed out a scale template of the image I wanted (ATi logo) for a 92mm fan. I then used a scroll saw to make almost all of the cuts. a drill press was used for the dot in the i and a dremel was used to smooth everythin out when i was done. This isnt the final thing, the real one will be made from cherry, be a bit smaller, as this one is a little too big. enough talk, heres the pic:
very nice craftsmanship! have you considered using a wood with a more complex grain on detailed parts (grills, drive bezels, etc)... like maybe tiger maple or something?
the drive bezels will be behind a door, so theres not really a point in stealthing them. but i spose using a different kind of wood on the grills isnt a bad idea, ill see if theres any nice complex grained pieces in my dad's workroom the next time i work on the grills.
Another small update. I made a 120mm Cherry fan grill. Still have a little bit of work to do on it though.... Heres the pics: lights out, no flash: lights out, with flash: lights on, flash on, side view: I thought it turned out pretty good. Of course in the end it'll be the same color as the case. Comments, questions welcome.
Not bad. Looks like it blocks a bit of air, but not bad at all That 120mm LED fan looks good too, SVC or what?
yeah, i thought it might block a bit, but i only need to to do about 50cfm and its rated for 80. its from SVC, yes. good deal too, only about $6.
Minor update: Heres the final version of the AMD grill i messed up when cutting it in one spot and it broke, so its kinda skinny in one spot, circled in red in the second pic.
This is looking interesting. I love wood. If you are using cherry wood then don't spoil it with stains or waxes. French polish it and make it a thing of beauty.
good job on the grills. The finish on the wood looks as if its going to be tough work , lots of sanding and waxing. I agree I prefer the look of darker wood. Just starting my 1st mod, hope to get my pics up by the sunday, every time i look at this site and the work being done, I gain more and more inspiration.
Excellent work here! It's great detail work on the grills. The joins to look weak between the different parts, perhaps strenghten it with a small bit of metal? Also not entirely sure how it would look but bevelled edges could look good. you'd see a nice cross section of the wood that way...
This is looking nice..... Given me loads of idea's... I would have never even considered using wood until i saw this thread... The thing is i work in a timber yard....MMMMmmmm! Loads of wood. We deal with cedar, white oak, parana pine, redwood and various white woods...Also plywood and mdf.... Loadsa modding possibilities..
looks good love that ati fan grill i agree with macro just french polish it and it will look awsome and elegent
If you carn't buy the grills you want then make some of your own, great use of this type of material.
