is this tape expensive? normally i just use sellotape. doesnt need to be waxed either ( theres special tape for moldbuilding 2 but sello does the job and is easier to get)

derbaum: the tape itself is indeed pretty expensive but again, why should i care . I get all the materials from my work, otherwise i would probably use some cheaper stuff. But from what i know, this teflon tape is the best

A very small update on the mobo cover alone. I released it from the mold and trimmed it a bit. Some reinforcements are still has to be made but here are the cover pics for now









The wall thickness of the cover is about 0.5mm, which turned to be a bit more flexible than i would like, so tomorrow I will hopefully take care of that. The 40mm fan openings and the cuts for the cpu and gfx WC blocks will be made later on

 

I love the professional approach and fitting of everything. It's coming along wonderfully ssR.

Ok guys another update.
Today I worked on the mobo cover again. Like I mentioned in the previous update, the cover came out a bit flexible so I had to reinforce it. For that I used a common method used in the composite materials industry to gain more wall thickness. A lightweight core material trapped between layers of fabric. For the core i used light grain balsa wood sheets 1mm thick.

Cutting the balsa sheets


After cutting the balsa to fir the shape of the mobo cover i sanded the edges at about 15° to allow the fiberglass take the corners.
After wetting the cover surface with some resin i applied the balsa sheets




On top of that came another layer of fiberglass fabric and finally peelply




After finishing with that part i moved on to fabricate the accent plates for the 40mm intake fans


Using SolidWorks i made sketches for the plates




Then I printed out the plates layout and glued it on top of 1.5mm aluminum. The holes for the fans were made using 38mm holesaw. After some filing and sanding i brushed the aluminum surface with rotary sander which gave the surface a very nice effect, i will be using on all the aluminum accent parts in this mod from now and on

The fiberglass work has been awesome. But it's good to see some other work. I was hoping the rest would be up to par with the 'glass. And the fan faceplate is definitely up there! Great! I'm a-watching!

It's been over a week since the last update, and I'm back with another update

I'm almost done with the mobo cover structure, i smoothed the surface and painted it in white primer and then high gloss black, which i will use for the interiors

And finally painted in black. I'm very satisfied with the result

 

Freaking A man, that paint job looks awesome and as usual the fiber glass work to make that cover is top notch. I love how the corners are perfectly rounded and smooth. I really need to try fiber glassing sometime because the results can be great.

 

holy smokes a complete mirror finish inthat paint! that was airbrushed, no?
