in the future when shooting photographs you don't need a really long exposure normally a 2-4 sec is more than enough. At least that's been my experience when i have done it.

That depends on how much light there is. Sometimes you will need a second or so, sometimes much more. Ideally, you should take a light reading. If there isn't enough light to get a reading at the ISO you wish to shoot at, then set the meter to the highest ISO you can, get a reading... any reading, then use reciprocity law to work backwards to the ISO you wish to shoot at. There is only one way to get an accurate exposure, and that is to use a meter. Anything else is guessing.

How much do people use light meters when they are out and about then? I thought they were just generally used in studios etc.
How useful would one be to someone learning photography?

I take it you are referring to hand held incident meters? I use one regularly. Only if there's no time do I not.

However, in my previous post, by "meter" I was referring to the camera's own meter equally. Almost all cameras have a meter, even if you personally don't have an incident meter, and you can still use it in the way described in my previous post.

How useful? Very. An incident meter is the ONLY 100% reliable way of metering (assuming it's used correctly), as it measures the light falling ON the subject, not reflecting OFF it - therefore is not effected by colour, tone, and reflectiveness of the subject.

Why assume they are only used in a studio?

Ah right thanks for clearing that up for me. Don't know why I thought they were just used in a studio I guess I just didn't really put that much thought into it!
