I just ordered an SSD and in prep for re-installing my OS I am trying to get things figured out. One of which, is which free anti-virus? Have AVG at the moment. Not sure if it's the best though?
I recommend Microsoft Security Essential. Mainly because it provides good protection, is non-intrusive, you feel like you have nothing, and doesn't slow down Windows boot time.
As GoodBytes stats Microsoft Security Essentials is a good bet. I can also recommend Avira Anti-Vir, which has consistently scored very high in detection rates.
+1 Been using this since moving to Windows 7 and never felt the need to swap out. Always recommend it to any friends also looking. Only other I would probably vouch for is Avast.
Using bullgaurd on my desktop and t rend micro on my laptop and had no hassles with either and low on the resources
I can also recommend MSE, use it on all my PC's and everyone elses I can recommend it to. Very quick, non intrusive and good detection rates.
I was with MSE until it let through a particularly unpleasant trojan on a family member's PC. I managed to kill it with Avira boot time scan and since then I've moved across to Avira on my own machines as well. I also use Comodo firewall instead of the W7 one simply because it's much more flexible and connections are easily visible. Despite my initial misgivings, I have actually found this combination to be very unintrusive and have noticed no slowdown or resource-hogging.
How about AVG or Avast ? - they're my standard choices on new builds, and I've never had an issue with either.
^This. Avira Antivir on 4 pcs/lappy in my house, i don't mind 1 solitary pop up with update downloads. I put MSE on mum's laptop just so it can chug away in the background and she didn't get freaked out.
Avira is one of the finest anti virus, I used avast & avg previously ,those were big rigid & covering much more space. Avira is better . I am happy with its performance . Really I used norton etc they were also not useful at that point of it
I tend to use AVG, just keep coming back to it for some reason. Used avira in the past and liked it. Used security essentials on the family pcs, but have since switched.
