Well, before going to such extreme security measures. Why don't you try talking to your parents?

I mean super glue, electric shock, mace . . .

Just make it clear to your parents and brother that you do not want anyone tampering with your PC.

And if your bother doesn't comply, then set up a video camera to catch him in the act.

And when you do catch him call the police. I am sure your parents will not like having the police come while people are staying at the B&B.

Hey maybe you'll get your brother arrested. That will teach him. Or maybe not. Or take him to court. Your family will make the news 'little brother arrested and sued by big brother for computer hacking'

Sounds like he is not just devious but down right evil and disrespectful.

Anyway I think locking the CPU and adding a finger regognition scanner like DigitalPersona UrU and posting signs "do not touch" should be enough to deter B&B guests.

Again if all else fails call the police.

using emachineshop.com make a thick alu hdd case and use a big connector like on zaps LANPC then use tabs for 5 or six padlocks.

get an old psu to power the drive and connect it using the mobo connector connect one of the mains lines to the some of the extra pins on the connector if your bro tries to hard wire it ******bzzzzzzt******** ouch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

lemme know if this is a re-post. its late and im too tired to read through 6 pages of posts.

its been suggested that he could just wire up a key switch to his power button, so the computer couldnt be turned on without the key.

    1.

is there such thing as a momentary keyswitch? then you could just replace you power/reset buttons with two momentary keyswitches... no?

    2.

i dont know alot about the inner workings of the usb/ps2. but what if you didnt want to turn your computer off, you just wanted to disable the keyboard and mouse. could you hook up a keyswitch to both the usb(for your mouse), and ps2(keyboard in my case) and when you walk away from your computer just turn the key?

guys this is getting insane, okay lets think about this
why the HELL would your brother want to get into your computer ? and even worse why the hell would people staying at your house break into your LOFT go to your computer break in and try to "format my drive" ? uhm come on man if they cant access it they are goin to format it? NO ONE is destructive and even if they were to attemp to break in. there are privacy laws give me a break, what is this like 5000 gigs of porn and you dont wana get cought or something? okay torx screws? pointless gimme 10mins i can give you 5 ways to get through.... and hell if he is ogn abe destructive he will get a dremel and cut them off or just cust the case open... i mean if i wanted securty i woudl take a small magnet and some wires on inside put a thin peice of plexi make a strange design... and make the magenet make them arc in a away and use it as a momentary switch... thats all ide bother with if someone really wants to break in let them... i really dont get why the world is after your 'data' and if you dont want them to access it localy, why the hell is it a file serv? i mean come on who is ogna be destructive and delete the isntall files on your drive so no one can install them? hell break in from a laptop and plug into your wire if you wnat securty, welde a 1inch thick solid steel case with mobo encased with unique power plug key lock key card removeable drives and botl it to the floor with a 800 $ car alarm that alerts you within 20 miles and then 20 security cameras.... come on its getting outa hand

no one is out to get your files... what is so important? really...

ther eis no way to block them that is worth it

    how about this lo-tec solution...

lock the server in a secure place (or hide in something) then run a network cable from that to a normal pc.

use pcanywhere/vnc to connect to the fileserver to administer it remotely.

this way there is no monitor, no keyboard, no mouse to deal with.

then you only need to worry about him getting network access to the box which is pretty straightforward.

I've seen mention of using security screws and stuff for the hard drive... but this is an Antec case... the hard drive cage is removable just by using the release lever. Same thing applies if you were to put it into the 5 1/4" bays, they're on rails, quck and easy removal. As long as somebody has physical access to a machine, they can get around the security measures you put, unless of course you go overkill as has been suggested and get like a custom steel case that's bolted to the ground and such. But as I said, that's overkill. If your brother is truly the computer guy he says he is, pretty much any software protection you throw at him will be bypassed short of heavy-duty encryption, and for physical... if you're worried that he'll pick a lock or something, what's to stop him from just taking a dremel or something to the case?

There's no such thing as a 100% secure system that a person has physical access to.

Eak, Captin Zap - are you posting in Welsh? Maybe it's just me but I found it really difficult to follow your post. Please check your posts before hitting 'Submit', and it will all be :hip:

How about creating a sentinal being to terminate anyone not yourself coming near your computer. Could be a problem if you have friends round though.

    sry bout the spelling...
you could just cover the floor round your pc with one or more of the folowing:mouce traps, rat traps, those evil dogi shock mats ,leg hold traps, land mines?;)
anyway the important quesdtion is what on earth are you protect, or is this a home atempt to make windows fit the dod standards?...have you ever thought bout sticking it all in a file cabanet and putting a fan or two in...its large its hard to open withought a crowbar or drilling/picking the lock and you could wire up a alarm system in there to set off a wailer if anything is opend withought disarming first...also kust because you say server dosn't mean it has to be verry large. what about a verry small shuttle mobo with a scsi or ide raid card and they have built in nic and sometimes on bord vid stuff some ram in and and 2-4 hd's and a cd rom or 2 and you have a sewrver the sise of a 5 gallon bucket or rubbermate with room to spair and that you can tuck anywhere you can tuck in a closset or chest of drwars ect... personaly if you find him messing with your system than adminaster the ultamate punishment, the ransom oh his vid card or processor...dige warefair...
