Built one of these up for a customer today. They are so easy to setup as well.

Hah, funnily enough I literally just picked this up today! Though I'd be pretty surprised if you were on a flying visit to Cardiff! :)

Nah bud London is bad enough. Building on a average 70 bikes a week.

Well. Took it out for a spin earlier and holy crap... I've been missing out.

Still a few niggles though: the hoods feel like they're too high, and the bars might be at the wrong angle; the chain scrapes the front derailleur; and there's a worrying rattle over rough roads...

Bars definitely the wrong angle. Play around with the low and high screw but on the extreme it might rub a bit.
The rattle without hearing it myself not sure. But take it back in and let them check it.

Aye, I'm going to drag it back to the store and have a chat with them tomorrow.

That has to be the most blinged out Trailstar I have ever seen in twenty years of Trailstars.

    I approve very much!

Halfords had my Boardman Road Team Carbon back today. Bars are fine now, got that sorted. They spotted that the bottom bracket was loose, so that was replaced. They reckoned the source of the rattle was just cable adjusters knocking together, so routed the cables slightly differently; they didn't find any other mechanical problems.

Well that didn't fix it because it's still rattling. It's not the drivetrain because it carries on when I'm not pedalling, and it stops when I'm on very smooth tarmac. I can't see any loose fittings/bolts anywhere. The chain is rubbing against the front derailleur in a few of the gears, but I can fix that and that's a different noise to the rattle I'm hearing.

I'll see how it is when I ride in tomorrow. Might take it to the local bike shop for a second opinion; I can't get there until the weekend though, so I'm not sure about that.

Yep. But it also rattles when I'm coasting.

So I have bought a folding commuter bike to get to and from the train station and work - Dahon D3.

It came with lights which seem pretty bright and have picked up a helmet and puncture repair kit (with some tools)

Anything else I should invest in before setting out for the first commute?

Spin the wheels see if its something in there. I remember loosing a spoke nipple in a rim that was quite noisy.

A spare inner tube or two? It's quicker to just put a new tube in rather than try and repair a puncture at the roadside. EDIT: That is, assuming you'd want to repair it at the roadside and not just pick it up to carry it...

On that note, do you have a pump?

Cheers for the advice. I'm getting it up on the stand this weekend to see if I can see what the hell is going on, it's driving me crazy! I've already taken off the reflectors and the bottle cage is next. I'll also be checking that the wheels are properly seated in the dropouts.

Inner tubes might be quicker, will look into getting a couple. Yep got a pump, cunningly built into the seat post.

Indeed! Sheesh, I leave for three years and the whole place goes down the drain. Let's get back on track! First some shots of my humble stable:

01: Cannondale Jeckyll 4. Currently sidelined because of the torn chainstay. :wallbash:
Still, I love this bike. Taking it to the shop today to be rebuilt.

02: Specialized Epic WC. This thing is nuts. under 10kg fully built. A sponsor is allowing me to ride it, it's his personal bike that he didn't like. Putting more miles on it now than I really want to, normally this is just for events and races.
