That is just not always true. Cheap cloths feel cheap sometimes. That's okay, because they're cheap(er), but it's still true.

True. Let me change the wording to "medium priced to expensive designer clothing".

Screw colours, just put some actual heatsinks on there. A block of angled aluminium is not a useful heatsink, moreso if you then go shove a bunch of glowing plastic shards on top of it.

Due to size / positioning restrictions (and common sense in heatsink design) the boards would look even more similar to each other if they followed a function before design approach as they couldn't even be differentiated by the shape of the useless plastic shrouds any more.

And while I would personally be fine with that... the Asus / Msi / Gigaspark / etc marketing departments would never allow it.

"Marketing departments", therein lies the problem.

Pin grid, continuous fin (multiple orientation possible, multiple pitches possible), interrupted-fin (again with multiple pitches and orientations, and also multiple interruption patterns), then you have base material: copper or aluminium, then coatings: bare, anodised, PVD coated, many colours possible.
vs. 'black, with glowing bits, and as many angles as you can cram onto the surface of a cuboid'.

I enjoy seeing people throw around the word performance like it actually means something. I don't like dysfunctional tech either, something that can't keep up with a stock clock is obviously no good, but most of the time looking for real-world performance changes between any of these parts is about as pointless as aesthetics in a windowless case, it's just another side of the same coin.

I think we should just circlejerk over some old tech some more if I'm honest.

I think there is more variety than you give the market credit for.

MSI's Arctic versions of it's boards
ASRock boards are pretty distinctive, mostly the Taichi and Fatal1ty models
Aorus and TUF boards with their orange/black and yellow/black schemes

I prefer what we have now, compared to the days of Gigabyte and Asus "crayola" boards, where every plug and slot was a different colour.

Colourful board are not suited for modern builds with a viewable side panel.
Black PCB is the best, I don't care if the PCI slots and heat sinks have colour.

Because we never had builds where the hardware was visible back in the day...

Given a choice I'd have mat black heatsinks please.
If you don't know why, then don't worry about it, just let me decide on that.

    Mat black heatsinks ta.

The rest of the colours are kinda irrelevant but you might as well make it from whatever is cheapest, right? Save the "coloured" money and spend it on better quality components
Take the RGB off and spend more dough on more quality components, good strong cpu areas for bit arse heatsinks and sensible location of SATA ports.

    thanks
