    Hey all.

Hoping for some input. I currently run an i5 4690k, 16Gb Ram, and a GTX 970. I game at 1080p 60Hz and for the foreseeable future that will be my resolution.

I do intend to upgrade my CPU/Mobo/RAM with time, but at the moment I’m planning on changing my GTX970 for something more current.

I have a budget of around £300 and I’m hoping for something as future proof as possible.

I’ve always been team green, but the release of the 5600 XT has certainly made me consider possibly switching sides this time!

The two GPUs that I’m contemplating are either the above mentioned 5600 XT ( when the variable bios issue is at least stable and clear what’s what!) or an RTX 2060.

I’d really appreciate thoughts and advice from anyone here as the GPU market can be an ever changing minefield!

Well the first question should be, what doesn't the 970 cope with?

It’s ok, and does well for the most part, but it’s starting to show its age in newer games. I like my 60FPS to be as consistent as possible!

2060, easily. AMD's drivers are a complete mess at the minute, if you get a 5600XT you might be faced with flashing the bios and risk bricking the card and even if you flash it successfully it still won't be quite as fast as a 2060.

Get a fully fledged 2060 not the KO. There's a few 2060's about for £300. If you don't mind second hand you could even get a 2070 or a 1080ti if you're patient and get a little bit of luck.

I'd rather avoid second hand if possible. So is there a particular 2060 that comes recommended?

Probably the Evga sc ultra. If you can stretch the £330 you could grab a Palit 2060 SUPER. Only drawback is I can't find a review of that card, unless you speak Russian?

From what I can gather it's decent enough though.

No, just don't. There's too much uncertainty with the card to have the peice of mind that it's not going to kill itself and maybe take other part of your system with it, regardless of make and model. When you can get a 2060 for the same price which is markedly faster and will 100% be within spec, only a fool would get a 5600XT now.

Alternatives are a 5700, overclockers have the GIGABYTE RADEON RX 5700 GAMING OC for £300 which edges the 2060 in performance, or the 5700XT which can be had from £340 and would outperform a 2060 super.

Yeh, I remember our debate (I think it was ours) on another thread a while back, the rule of thumb is 10xx isn't really worth it over the 20xx ones anymore, and that 2070 is a steal! My 1080 was £300 second hand only last June and you can get new 2070's for the same price (ish) now! Slightly better performannce plus RTX and other fun stuff!!!

Yeah at some point something has to give.

With prices dropped over every card lower than a 2080 Pascal prices were going to suffer eventually.

20 series cards now offer value. Mainly thanks to AMD but hey, I'll take it.

I do plan on upgrading the monitor eventually but it’ll be a while, and probably the last thing I change ( after Cpu etc)

I’m assuming a 2060/2070 will cope with a future bump up to 1440p? I’ll most likely end up staying at 60Hz.

My 1080 handles 1440 perfectly fine as well over 90Hz, so a 2070 will easily do it and a 2060 will be fine at 60Hz,

Yeah easy as pie. The 2070 was a top tier card so it'll obviousluly have more legs. I'd say it'll last you as long as that 970 has, whereas the 2060 not so much given it is a 60 series card. The 2060 super nips at the heels of the 2070, but still isn't quite there. Plus that's "current" gen as it were and thus costs about the same as the 2070.

No diligence will work. MSI report that some cards simply won't work on the new bios. Theres been hints that they're going to do an OC card, but with Luna new year and all that may take a while.

So it's a lottery. You either end up getting a 5600XT that's worth the money, yet no major bargain or, you get one that totally isn't worth the money. At all. Mainly because I feel these are the Polaris replacements and thus cost far too much to begin with.

Sure, they stand up there with Nvidia's mid range cards but they're had peanuts of R&D in comparison, the Stock coolers are jank and you don't get RT or anything else. Which all cost Nvidia money whether they're earth shattering or not (I'll take the or not)

Vega 56 at the end was a good card at good prices. Navi? Meh. Best part to come from that is the price drops Nvidia have made IMO.
