Right now as I type this my AMD 965 is at 52C according to my ASRock OC utility. Speedfan will not work for some reason. I have an Arctic cooling heatsink. It is overclocked to 3.8ghz with cpu voltage at 1.456. During gaming the cpu goes up to 66C which if I am correct the temp limit for this cpu. Can anyone tell me there thoughts on what this cpu should be at? Should I spring for a new cooler?

Use Realtemp for your temps, I've been using it for ages and not had a problem :)

If those temp figures are accurate, 66 degrees , OC'd and under load, is more than acceptable.
    No need to worry.

I'm going to jump in here and say no!

The max temp for that chip is 62 degrees, so you're well into the danger zone there. Try and keep it below 55 degrees if you can.

AMD chips run cooler than Intel CPUs do in most cases, but they need to be kept cool too.

AMD chips do run cooler but I don't know what their thermal limits are so I'm inclined to agree with Yslen. Have you given your case and HSF a good clean lately?

So we have differing ideas here. I thought they seemed a bit high. The cpu cooler is clean as are the case fans. The AMD 965be is not supported by realtemp. Is there an application that will let me control the cpu fan?

According to AMDs website, max temp for this cpu is 62C.

I think thats a bit high. Mine runs 3.7ghz and temps are 35c idle and max of 57c under full load.
My voltage is only at 1.4 though.

Whats the ambient temp where the computer is.
Varies between 18-25 in my room. Unless its like 30c where your computer is i would maybe dial down the cpu or reapply the heatsink.

that does seem a bit high my phenom ii b50 ticks over at 29c idle and under load 42c running at 3.9ghz with 1.55volts going through it. :brrr:

drop the overclock and temps will probably go to norms for that proc, if you overclock it, expect temps to go up.

62 for the max temp of of proc seems low to me

The 965 should do between 3.6-3.8 on stock voltages. No need to increase voltages. And those temps are high, no doubt about that.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will drop the Vcore down and maybe even lower the OC until I can get a better heatsink. Before that I may try and reinstall the heatsink and see if that helps.

Well, I switched back to the stock AMD cooler, lowered the VCore to 1.4, and lowered the OC to 3.6. Now temps are sitting at 53C as I am only running fire fox. When gaming it went up to 58C. I am guessing that Arctic Cooler Pro sucks ass for AM3 sockets or I got a bad one. Looks like I need to find another heatsink.:sigh:

i used to run the zerotherm nirvana on my phenom and it used to idle at 30c and under load about 48c. would recommend that cooler. this was with my phenom ii x2 550 unlocked to a quad overclocked to 3.8 and pumping 1.52 volts through it. only changed as i got a coolit domino for next to nothing. but now running that on and amd athlon 250 and the temps are bloody low. 25c idle 40c load on a 3.9 overclock. hope that helps

I ordered a Xigmatek Rifle heatsink. When it gets here I will update with my temps.
    Thanks for the replies.

My 965 BE is running 25C idle and the highest it gets it 52/53C under load with the most demanding game I have (stock heatsink). It gets around 45C with CoD:MW2.

    It hasn't been OC'd at all (3.4).

AMD cpus can take more voltage than intel's, however need to be kept cooler to stay happy ;)

Final temps with the new Xigmatek cooler are topping out at 64C. Much cooler then the Arctic Cooling Pro and that noisey stock AMD fan. This is at 3.8ghz. Still borderline too high. I might need to switch cases. My Dell XPS510 atx modded case is just not flowing enough air I guess.
