um, skuze me for being ignorant, but if the official price list hasn't budged, then this is all the retailers' idea, and not an amd-sanctioned price cut...

If it was just the retailer instead of an official price cut, then they wouldn't have all dropped the prices simultaneously and by the same amount =)

yah, maybe, but bit of a stretch to refer to newegg and novatech as "all". love newegg an' all, but it's pricegrabber that's my real friend.

Actually, it is probably AMD giving the retailers a rebate ahead of an official price cut. That's the way it usually works as the retailers do not have enough margin to reduce prices by about 17 percent... that's especially true in the UK where single digit margins are not uncommon.

OK so AMD is cutting their workforce 9% yet believes they can turn things around if they drop the price 17% this soon?

They really should have waited a month at least.

Sure.... why not? a few more units sold by Intel because the AMD product wasnt price competitive... that makes sense to me too. *sigh.. what ever*

in business... even if you sell at a loss having the CASH FLOW is king! without cash flow a business dies.

Yeah, now I don't have cash next month I will have cash but the month after that I'll have spent it all. :p

That said, if I had the cash I'd consider a Phenom II if prices go below £150 or so.

funy, i was just getting together a system upgrade (mobo, ram, proc, videocard) based on the Intel and on the AMD platform, viewing benchmarks, chip sets etc. My overall conclusion was that a Phenom II BE 940 with a 790GX chipset motherboard and cheap DDR2 ram was the winner in my list. Slashing of 180 euro of the Intel Quad Q9550 P45 based counterpart i had chosen. Both setups included a Gigabyte GTX285 (356 euro) and 4GB OCZ reaper (64 euro)

In the Dutch webshop I was using for reverence the Phenom was 249 euro yesterday, and now it is 216 euro!
The Q9950 remains the same at 251 euro. I will see if it changes in the next week.

All I can say, this is good for the consumer

It does show that AMD have a competitive product for Intel to start dropping prices, I am seriously considering a Phenom || for my second box (Q9300 currently but its a pants overclocker :p )
