hi all, ive recently started getting random BSOD's while casually browsing the internet or at desktop. This however hasnt occured during a game, now i havent installed or reinstalled anything in the past 2 months. the last thing i installed was my ASUS Xonar DS soundcard and i downloaded the lastest(lol) drivers from the ASUS website. My temperatures on my CPU and GPU are perfectly fine, ive tried returning everything to stock and to still no avail it keeps crashing, the BSOD clears quite quick so i cant quickly note anything down to google it. my specs are in my sig, however i had 4GB RAM originally, then i upgraded to 8GB (around 4months ago) is there anything i need to do to get the 2nd set of 4GB RAM to run at the same speed as the other 4GB? these sets are Corsair XMS3 1600MHz memory. I also noticed one day, i have 2 sticks labeled 2x4GB and 2x2GB. Weird thing is, there all 2GB sticks, im thinking they labeled it wrong. Any help is apprectiated x
Go to: Computer > System properties > Advanced system settings (on the left side column). Now on that last panel, click on the bottom most Settings button. Another panel will open. On it, uncheck the box Automatically restartunder System failure. Now, you will be able to see the BSOD message.
no i havent, ill run that through tonight and post my findings tommorow. And yeah ive now unchecked the "automatically Restart" box in there, if it does BSOD again, ill google the problem . thanks.
You should be able to see any past bsod codes in the event viewer under the system category. You should also have a look in the application category, as sometimes there are corresponding errors there that will help narrow down the cause. I had an odd one recently that ended up being caused by a particular bad windows update.
in the event viewer theres a few critical errors, a lot of warning errors and a few of red errors, all seem to be errors within STARTUP, SHUTDOWN and STANDBY monitoring. I have no clue what they mean, or how to make sense of them. I have noticed my PC takes a little while to boot (8gb memory and a quad core @ 4.4ghz) and it takes like 2mins. windows reports both my HDD's are in perfect health. any ideas?
If you have the same error multiple times, perhaps you can copy paste the entire message? That would be much more helpful than the error category. Start with the most common critical, then the most common general errors.

Ah well dude, you overclocked your computer... that's most likely your problem. Just some stability problem.
I agree. OC is unstable and is causing the diagnostics service to kick off. I didn't notice the @4.4ghz before. Bring your oc down to something more realistic for day to day. Make sure it passes a good 3-4 hours at least of prime95 and you should be ok.
Nothing comes up, i did run a disc cleanup and defrag, is there any chance the cleanup deleted the dump files?
I would also go with your OC being unstable in most cases, when did you set up your OC?, BSOD are caused by hardware changes rather that software as you have to almost delete the windows system files on a massive scale to cause it do bsod via software changes, run memtests to see if your memory passes. You mentioned "is there anything i should do to get the 2nd set of memory to run at the same speed as the first set?" in your post ----Does that mean you are using two different types of memory with different speed settings, if you could clear that point up? Also 6 hours of prime95 or 24 hours of prime does not always Guarantee a stable overclock i did lots of prime on my oc-ing and also passed 24hr prime tests and intel burn tests which are meant to be harser than prime only for my OC to still bsod a few days during normal use or gaming after of what i thought was a stable OC, what you should do is dail it back down to its default ghz and see how your pc behaves for a few days if it does not bsod then there is your answer. What settings are your OC at and your vcore, did you set them yourself with testing to you found the sweet spot or have you just used someone elses OC settings from a guide for the i5?
OC has been setup since november 2010. the RAM is the same type and speed. i have put all my OCs down to stock at the moment, i used the motherboards program from its drivers to do the overclocking for me, as i had some idea on how to do it but not fully. i shall post in the next few days to see if it BSODs again. Thanks for the help =)
If you find that it stay's stable after dropping your OC off, then when you come to overclock again its best to post for advice on how others have done it, generally its a case of dailing in a suitable amount of Vcore (temp depending) and a multiplier at your desired speed if it holds stable on x vcore then lower the vcore bit by bit with a few days use and priming in between till it becomes unstable gain from lack of volts, then just raise the vcore back by the .01 till its stable hence the sweet spot term....a proper overclock depending how much time you spend testing in between can take a few days to set up...i found out the hard way using just settings provided by a guide it not always the best option as it seems it can differ chip to chip even on the same setups.
