I'm sorry but I'm going to have to call you insane if you actually believe this. Think on Quake a few years ago, there were hundreds of mods for quake, there were almost certainly hundreds of serious mods for HL1 as well. There was so much being done back then. Now we have HL2 with maybe 5-15 big mods. He's right on the money, modding is going down the pan. Personally I blame the devs for this, they know they can make money from selling mods that used to be after valve did it, they know they can sell episodic content and tiny add-ons a la Oblivions downloads. So they really have no incentive to make thing easily modable anymore. Why help others do for free what you can do and charge for?

Well since the previous ones were and are put up on the internet, with websites such as gamespy and gamasutra, 2006's keynote should be up soon...I hope.

    garrys mod anyone?

game engines are starting to become very complicated to mod, mod teams are starting to disapear or are making great mods for older games, like Reborn for C&C Renegade.

Well done, you named one mod. Even Garry's mod is now turning corporate I believe. Once that's gone, how many actual mods are there going to be left for HL2? Compare that with how many mods existed for HL1 20 months after it's release will you? Or Quake 1 or 2?

The modding community for many games is dying, and with the proper help(the help that used to be present) from devs this wouldn't be happening. Modding is a direct competitor with games companies, so while it doesn't surprise me to see it being slowly inhibited and killed off, it does sadden me.

    right on the money

look at red orchestra for example, IIRC this started out as a UT2k3 mod, now i can pay up 20 bucks if i want to play it, straight to valve, EA also screwed over the DC team pretty badly

and just go and see what amount of mods there are for a game like star trek voyager elite force, a relatively unpopular Q3 engined game, i bet you you can find more quality mods then HL2 has in mods period

and just look at level building too, back in the Q2 days the levels had a few thousand pollys tops, just try making a UT2k4 map that looks anywhere near as good as the pack in maps... the entry threshhold has gotten to high imho
