I'm kind of divided on it, as is my housemate with whom I watched it. The ending is stupid because they took a decision they could have postponed for quite a while still, leaving that stupid guy without an easy way out only to realize what an absolute moron he was and gawk at those 'losers' from the supermarket they 'escaped' from.

If there's anything this movie defines it's painful, mind numbingly painful irony. Doesn't mean that group of people who escaped by car weren't morons, though. In the end there was no one I wanted to stay alive or actually gave a damn about. That's not a good ending.

Interestingly, the short story of The Mist was one of the major inspirations for Half-Life. Valve loved the idea of a military base where everything went wrong and aliens started appearing and you don't really know what's going on or how long it'll last for, apparently.

Personally, I quite like the film. The ending drags on a bit too long, but it's quite good.

    Alternatively,

    [ spoiler ]

    [ /spoiler ]

Another film to check out. Didn't we have a movie recommendations thread once? Whatever happened to that?

edit - oh, the HD thread is doing it now.

I figured out what's missing from this thread. Despite all the stormtroopering, we actually missed the original:

+rep to you both for having impeccable taste in movies

Cloverfield did that for me. Exactly that. In fact I was hoping what you said for all of the film. Except in the end I got my wish ;)

Never read the short but as I was watching the movie something was bugging me (no pun intended). Then near the end I finally realized, "Of course! This is a ripoff..*Cough*.. Homage to H.P. Lovecraft!" And well done too.
