this is odd, when in any Half-Life based mod, even though my fps setting in the game is at 99, it's still locked to a maximum of 60 somehow.

it never used to do this on win98SE! and there's no obvious registry settings.

anyone know how this can be resolved?

Tis an XP thing I believe, where i think it automatically sets the refresh rate to 60Hz as MS thinks that what we like to use for gaming  there is a way around it though........other people have had this problem but for the life of me I cant remember what they did to solve it

    :(

Q3 isnt affected cause i get 150-200+ in that.. but why h/l?

yeah v-sync is just to stop "tearing" at high res's most people don't need it on, it only kills ur fps

V-sync - It synchornises the images being drawn to the refresh rate of the monitor - therefore there is no flicker :D

    I use fps_max 100 and can get 100fps when playing counter-strike.

When nothing is happening on the screen it does go down.

I do still get the refresh rate problem, running @60 instead of 85 like my desktop.

I have also noticed that when running my Prophet 3D 64 card on anything other than opengl the FPS drops. ie direct3D and software.

Software I would have expected but I would have thought that Direct3D would have been ok. Oh well it still looks good and I have no slow downs. The refresh rate is only a problem when I stand still. (which is a bad idea)...

    Just my pennies worth...

I find it quite fun to limit the frame rate in CS, esecially as i work at "Lan-Arena"

If any of you have heard of lan arena, its a company that runs a number of sites (located in mega-bowls) that have 32PC networked together so you can play our mates and cant blame ya ping.

People think its really cool whe you limit the FPS to say 10, and can still beat the n00bs, best scroe i ever had was running 25FPS and got a 30v2

i remember using a k6/2 450 and a v3 3000, and getting 8fps in cs_militia on the big open part infront of the house (in CS) :D in 800x600...

Download a program like powerstrip that lets you set up your own refresh rates etc for any display setting et al - I had to use it to get me greater than 60fps in HL based games after swapping from NVidia to ATi. Couldnt find anything else as handy as the NVidia refreh rate fixer for the new ATi card..

But if you only get 100 - lol does it matter???? 50 fps is brilliant, 40 fps is great! 30 FPS IS PLAYABLE - So what does it matter? :D

\__= main reason why I quit the CS community (I was good idd, even at slow framerate) and started ruling in TFC! wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii ;)

oh oh oh, does anyone knows M², the biggest LAN party in Belgium? I went there previous time and I'm planning on going there again. Does anyone goes there too?

actually i can easily tell the difference between 72 and 100fps. anything below 50-60 is now pretty unplayable for me.

Yeah, I'm with Bindi on that one.

The greater your fps, the smoother and more responcive the game becomes - especially in more fast paced HL mods such as Team Fortress - but you can see the difference in Counter-Strike too.
