You should hear Americans speaking Norwegian (thinking they are, at least). I can't make out one word of what they are saying - Eh? In English please.
Dad - about deep south accents. I heard that some Louisiana police department used a voice recognition system over the phones to direct calls to specific officers, but the system couldn't understand what anyone was saying. hahaha whoops off topic a little i dont think i have a deep south accent, but i do say "ya'll" and i'm probably the furthest thing from a british accent on these forums. [and probably the only one who understands George W.] -sitra
For me a row-ter is a power-tool for wood-working, a roo-ter is the networking thingy. (and i got a oxfordian accent if that's a word, if not, just say posh)
row-ter to me usually means the networking thing. if you were to say "cnc row-ter" i would figure out that it was the cutting thing, but i hear the word and naturally assume it's the network equip, just because of my occupation and background. the accents i have the most trouble with are the north carolinan ones. the least noticable accents to me are the ones from, who'da thunk it, washington. might have someting to do with being 5 min from the border.
row-ter = networking OR power tool, depending on conversation roo-ter = nothing Yea, I saw something about that at cnn.com or somewhere. Funny stuff!
even the American Dictionary.com knows that its 'root' http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=route
Roo-ter - - The think you use to snake out our drain pipes when the poop gets clogged in there. Roto-rooter... router - Network Controller / powertool.. As for the North Carolina accent, I can attest. I had a guy talk to me in what sounded to me like full Mandarin Chinese, and it was what he would call english... He had 4 teeth, and one of them wasn't even silver yet. It took me 2 months just to adjust to hearing them, and understand them.. Then I couldn't get rid of the accent. I'm from the Midwest, so I speek like the national news, but pidk up accents quickly.
There ya go! Call Roto-Rooter, that's the name, and away goes troubles down the drain! Same here. Same "accent" as the news people (think cnn / msnbc / etc). Isn't there a thread about this already?
Ok, let's get this straight you bally 'mericans: If you get your kicks on 'Route 66' (Said 'root' and incidentally goes from Chicago to LA according to the song) , then you 'Root' your packets.. and it's a Root-er. Anything else is wrong Just like GIF is 'Jif' (as in Giraffe) and not 'g-if' (as in Gibbon). Here's a can opener for the worms. *LALALA I'M NOT LISTENING*
