And I'm not interested because..? Oh yeah... $40 a month, $500 for the device that is neither revolutionary, nor a good phone. I had a PDA for many years now, and even with a stylus it gets dirty, oily and scratched up. Now using just your finger... Oh my. The only thing I like about the thing is the way it looks and the idea of google maps on a small portable device. I think Apple needs to do some growing up to do if they want to reach anyone apart from trendy college students and irrational fanboys.

Good choice, I'm waiting for the HTC S730 version to replace my age old SPV C500. Just seems so cool to have normal and qwerty keypads in one phone-sized device.

As for the iPhone, it just does everything Smartphones have been doing for years as far as I can tell. People should check out the HTC Touch if they want a cool interface and new touchscreen tech.

Its going to bring web browsing to a mobile platform, and not just a few pages designed for mobile phones, it'll let you get on the web easier that other phones. Of course it needs EDGE /3G but I think that it'll have that when it comes to our shores.
The iPhone will be influential, just like the iPod was with MP3 music and distribution..
Multi touch is the future and its going to be used in a multitude of applications from laptops to Microsoft Surface...

You can't use the WiFi apparantly unless you buy a data plan, stupid IMHO.

I think that's really down to being able to control both the software and the hardware on the device really- Windows Mobile is an extremely functional platform and could probably be a whole lot better, but so much time has to be spent making sure it works on various pieces of hardware with different processors, resolutions and wireless technologies that it's a lot more standardised and lot less specialised. It really reflects the whole Apple/PC debate really- on the one hand you have a nicely put together package that does what you want to seamlessly and simply, and on the other hand you have a platform that can be run on anything the hardware guys throw it on and can be adapted to various devices. Microsoft or Apple:Compatability or contunuity?

Microsoft's Deepfish already does full webpage browsing, and connecting to the web is just as easy as other phones- mine will switch from Wifi to GPRS if it goes out of range and most other phones with those features will do the same.

I'm waiting a day or two to see what major reactions are, beyond the four journalists who got one early. Then I'm probably getting one either way. My current phone is utter crap, the iPhone will be a massive upgrade in every way possible, consolidate my pocket-devices, and sync properly (I'd certainly hope, anyways) with my computer.

I'm not as concerned as most about the EDGE network. Partly because the idea of (real) internet on my phone at any speed is quite new to me, somewhat more because I spend most of my time in range of a WiFi hotspot. And the lack of MMS is a definite non-issue for me since it does rich email, which I'd greatly prefer to texts - they're the same thing, anyways (myphonenumber@vtext.com texts me, though the suffix will change once I get the hell off of Verizon's crapwork).

Well not surprising when you consider its OS X, even if its a stripped down and bulimic version of sed operating system, but it does have the space to cope with that: 4/8Gb flash memory...

The OS only uses 70Mb, and is stored on a 128Mb flash, i'm fairly certain that was a typo at engadget.

    Further:
    1. Bluetooth is ONLY good for connecting a headset. That's it.
    2. There is no file browser on the device at all. Data must be organized (if at all) in the appropriate application.
    3. The camera is a simple application that has ONE button: the shutter. Pictures come out okay on the device, but nothing too fancy on a monitor, especially if it was an attempt at a macro shot.
    4. SIM card is damn near impossible to open, if at all. I didn't look into it extensively.
    5. Web browser is slow, even over WLAN. Even the simple OneList web app that was created takes around 20 seconds to load over WLAN. You can not highlight, cut, copy, or paste and text from a website, and you can not save any images you find from a website either. The only nice thing about it is the tabbed browsing, which crashed on me when I went to Engadget and YouTube on two tabs. This is the only application that allows you to use the keyboard in landscape mode.
    6. The keyboard sucks. It gets slightly better after the iPhone "learns" you, as the employees said, but even then, it's not a device you can use with one hand comfortably, much less without looking.
    7. You can only send one picture at a time in an email.
    8. No custom ringtones (yet, as we were being told) and the alert tones can not be changed whatsoever.
    9. The default ringtones are incredibly lame.
    10. The only form of customization outside of a lame default ringtone is the wallpaper, which you'll only see when you need to unlock the device or when you get a phone call.
    11. "Picture pinching" or using two fingers to zoom on any content is certainly fun to play with, but not practical whatsoever. This operation depends solely on using the device with two hands.
    12. No document editor or native viewer. You can not store documents on the device to be viewed, they can only be viewed as attachments when they're sent to your in an email.
    13. Visual voicemail is laggy and reacts about the same way as pushing the fast forward and rewind buttons on traditional voicemail systems. The only advantage is for those that get that many voicemail messages a day that they need to sort them according to priority.
    14. NO games. None.
    15. No voice dialing.
    16. No speed dialing (which can be made up by the "quick list", but getting to that quick list isn't as fast as holding a single key on a real keypad).
    17. No video.
    18. No MMS.
    19. It's still <4GB for $500 and <8GB for $600
    20. It only takes around 2 hours to explore every menu without any options for expandability except to scrounge around for new web apps that will load slowly and nowhere near as smoothly as the native apps.

Whats the point in having a $500 if it doesn't have Snake II on it?

as i say with most apple products: "Whats the point?"

    Sansa e200 series > iPod
90% of new phones > iPhone

Both problems lie in: too expensive for not a lot. Having said that, i think the Macbook Pro (silver) looks good, and the magnetic power plug is a great idea. however it is still too expensive.

I just bought a Samsung E900, which does everything i need and more. to be honest a Nokia 1100 would do what i want: text & phone. camera is nice, but not needed, i have a proper camera(s) for that.

While the iPhone is obscene and ridiculous, I was able to pick up a basically brand new 60 gig iPod on eBay for significantly less than a 30 gig because the owner had just bought an iPhone and desperately needed cash as a result of it. He even threw a free iSkin. So while I would never buy an iPhone, I'm perfectly content with reaping the benefits of its release.

A lady bought ten of em.

I won't buy one, but won't say no to being given a free one :)

I might wait a few months, till someone manages to crack the OS and let people install apps on it, and then I'll put Skype on it, and screw Cingular. Or maybe get an imported European one as it's rumored they'll also have 3G and be with T-Mobile, and since I have T-Mobile.. just a matter of swapping the SIM card right? :)
